Sewing Machine Operator

POSITION SUMMARY  

Operating industrial sewing machines. Single needle and /or side seem sewing machine to close the opening through which synthetic or natural fillings are inserted into pillow ticks, comforter shells, cushions, and/or other related products with accuracy and speed, to meet company expectations. This position places a strong significance on effective teamwork, clear communication, sound judgment, safety orientation, achieving and maintaining production efficiency, and a dedication to the quality of our product.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Retrieve pillow from conveyor
• Start and operate industrial sewing machine(s), to automatically join, reinforce, or decorate material or articles
• Draw thread through guides, tensions, and needles, and adjust sewing machine functions according to material type
• Place spools of thread, cord, or other materials on spindles, and draw thread through guides, tensions and needles, and adjust sewing machine functions according to material type
• Position item under the needle, using marks on the machine, clamp or template, edges of the material, or markings on material as guides
• Turn knobs, screws, and dials to adjust settings of the sewing machine, according to product style and observation of operation
• Observe sewing machine operation to detect defects in stitching or machine malfunction, and notifies supervisor/manager immediately
• Guide pillow or shell parts under machine needles and presser feet to sew parts together
• Cut material and threads, using scissors
• Sew pillow at a rate of 5 to 6 per minute
• Turn pillow and beat, forcing fiber to spread out evenly inside pillow ticking.  Pillow weights up to three (3) pounds
• Inspect for damaged pillows
• Set pillow aside to bagging conveyor
• Re-thread machine and replace needles, as needed
• Empty sewing waste at least once per shift
• Blow out sewing machine at least once per shift
• Fill-in on Utility job functions, as required
• Responsible for cleanliness and housekeeping in the work area
• Comply with Company safety policies, procedures, and best practices
• Other projects as assigned by the manager

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS OR EDUCATION

• High School Diploma
• 3 years of sewing experience. Industrial Sewing Certification is a Plus
• Good manual dexterity
• Attention to detail and hand-eye coordination
• Skilled at utilizing proper sewing techniques and understanding sewing machine components or willing to learn
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
• Ability to work repetitive jobs at a fast pace
• Willing and able to work overtime and/or occasional weekends as needed
• MUST have reliable transportation
