TITLE: Special Education Teacher- Deaf and Hard of Hearing
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH)
- Valid Maryland State Certification in Deaf/Hard of Hearing
- Experience working with students with a variety of disabilities outlined in IDEA.
- Experience in analyzing data and using results to implement specially designed instruction into general education lessons to address individual students’ learning needs and styles.
- Can demonstrate knowledge of child development, learning theories, and effective teaching techniques.
- Has thorough knowledge of curriculum design and assessment strategies.
- Has good organizational, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Possess an entrepreneurial spirit; be flexible, willing, and able to play different roles in the department, and go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of the students.
- Consult with teachers, parents, and specialists regarding children with hearing impairments.
- Perform clerical duties related to communication and progress monitoring.
- Knowledge of the MD Online IEP system.
- Organize schedules to meet the needs of students in a wide geographical range.
- Drive a car to various locations within the workday, in locations in and around Kent County.
- Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISES: N/A
JOB GOAL: Under the direction of the Supervisor of Special Education and in collaboration with the principals, the DHH Teacher will work with special education teachers to support best practices in using data, provide analysis of classroom and school-wide trends in instruction and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of individual needs of students. As an advisor to teachers and principals, the teacher is responsible for providing support in instructional planning and delivery, specifically designed instruction, analyzing data to adapt curriculum, and sharing of best practices across all academic disciplines with students who are DHH.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Initial and ongoing assessments designed for DHH students.
- Assist in screening and selecting students for enrollment in DHH services.
- Provide instruction and or support to DHH students in the development and maintenance of skills specified in the student’s IEP.
- Develop transition plans to move DHH students to targeted career, vocational and life skills.
- Provide instruction and support in career and vocational education skills in coordination with vocational education staff and/or rehabilitation counselors that coincide with transition plans.
- Provide assistance and support to classroom teachers that, as a direct result of hearing impairment, require adaptation.
- Work as a member of a trans-disciplinary team for planning, assessing, and developing appropriate IEP/transition plan goals.
- Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with students, teachers, staff, parents, and other support staff and agencies.
- Providing in-service/training to students and staff regarding hearing loss and its implications along with the use of amplification equipment and assistive technology.
- Assist in identifying, developing, and implementing appropriate use of resources for instructional application specifically for the DHH population.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As found in the Agreement Between the Kent County Teacher’s Association and The Board of Education of Kent County. Ten (10) month position.
FLSA Status: Exempt
SALARY LANE: Teacher’s lane. Step established by the Superintendent.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
