SUMMARY: The Campus Nurse supports the mission of the Student Services Department which is to create and maintain a living and learning environment that will enhance the potential for spiritual, social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of students so they can become Christian leaders and servants in the Church and in professions throughout the world.
The Nurse’s overall objective is to promote and maintain conditions that permit and encourage each student to realize optimum spiritual, social, emotional, physical, and intellectual wellness by administering first aid, providing ambulatory care, emergency services, referrals, health education, health screenings, wellness promotion, and through maintaining accurate student medical records.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: The Campus Nurse reports to the Vice President of Student Services and works closely with other members of the Student Services staff, particularly the Directors of Campus Counseling, Men’s and Women’s Services.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- The Campus Nurse is a full-time (August through May, 40 hours per week) staff position in Student Services paid semi-monthly (paid over 12 months). Additional summer hours for administrative work or the coverage of summer camp programming may be added as needed.
- Support the University’s mission to engage students in a transformative experience that equips them as effective Christian professionals providing servant leadership for the church and society, and the University’s pervasive focus of Christ, Character, and Career.
- The successful candidate shall recognize and support the University’s affiliation with the Stone-Campbell tradition (Church of Christ/Christian Church).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Campus Nurse has essential responsibilities including, but not limited to:
- Provide each client with professional, competent, timely service utilizing the nursing process;
- Maintain confidential health records on all residence hall students and commuting students;
- Coordinate the receipt and evaluation of all incoming resident students’ records of immunizations which must be completed and approved prior to registration;
- Create a table of student medical issues of concern and personally contact those students with specific needs, as well as, contacting the people on campus with a need to know the issues of
concern (i.e., Directors of Men’s or Women’s Services, Professors, Resident Assistants, etc.)
- Maintain a detailed record of calls and visits to the Health Services Office and all position related calls made by the health nurse to other locations, both on and off campus;
- Make referrals as needed and communicate pertinent information to the consulting physician or agency;
- Provide emergency response to health-related needs on campus;
- Serve as a resource person for Student Services staff, including providing medical supply kits and basic medical training for Resident Assistants;
- Provide health information and conduct health education programs for the University;
- Maintain stock of first aid supplies; assure medical equipment is in proper working condition; order supplies and equipment as needed;
- Serve as liaison with the Academic Office for students in regard to medical issues and the need for excused absences;
- Oversee the placement, training, and public awareness of all Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) on campus, to include required updates and battery pack service;
- Maintain a collaborative relationship with the athletic training staff and the campus counseling service;
- Provide the Yancey School of Nursing with any medical forms needed for students in the nursing program;
- Maintain current knowledge of medical advances and information, public health issues and treatment procedures;
- Serve in a leadership position as the “Healthy at Work Officer” on the University’s COVID response team until post-pandemic dissolution. This includes, but is not limited to, the
following actions: collaborate with the County Health Department, oversee infection control measures, triage symptoms, establish quarantine/isolation procedures, conduct
contact tracing, collaborate with student services for housing changes and meal delivery, ensure that necessary provisions are made for impacted students, collaborate with student
counseling services for the well-being of impacted students;
- Keep regularly scheduled office hours (to be determined);
- Advertise and promote use of the KDMC 24-hour call center for all after-hours emergencies;
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings as an active part of the Student Services team;
- Maintain and comply with all policies, rules, and regulations included in the KCU Staff Handbook;
- Perform related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and/or abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
- Education: The position requires a Registered Nurse (RN) to carry out the “standing orders” of a local physician.
- Experience: At least two (2) years nursing experience required. A wide variety of general nursing experience is desired and experience at the higher education level preferred. Must understand the developmental state and needs of both traditional age college students, 18-25-year old, and various non-traditional students.
- Certifications: Proof of current nursing license and CPR certification is required on a yearly basis.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
The Campus Nurse must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals or groups on campus or from customers, and the general public.
