Personal Assistant Job Description

Student has Level 1 Autism, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Prenatal Drug Exposure, Auditory Processing Disorder, Selective IGA Deficiency, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Reactive Attachment Trauma from her adoption. Our goal is to help teach her to live independently. Staff will work with student 20 hours a week consistently, with occasional weekends as needed so mom and dad can travel for sports with their younger son. Student is a teenage girl who prefers Women over Men. We are a Christian family so a strong Christian faith is required. References and a Federal FBI background check are also required upon offer of employment.

Bathing/Hygiene/Dressing:

  • Staff will help student understand the importance of bathing, shaving, washing her hair brushing her teeth and general body hygiene care.
  • She does well with dressing herself, although she tends to wear the same thing all the time. She could use some guidance in adding some change up to her wardrobe.

Mobility:

  • No physical assistance in walking or moving.

Meal Preparation/Assistance with Meals and Clean Up:

  • Staff will work to teach student to eat less and navigate low carb meals and snacks for her health
  • Staff will need to assist with preparing healthy meals for dinner, which will include following simple recipes, building cooking skills, and collecting new recipes for student to eventually cook independently.
  • Staff will need to teach and ensure student cleans up after cooking, throwing trash away, doing the dishes using warm water to properly clean, and making sure food is stored safely.
  • Staff may discuss what to do in kitchen emergencies.
  • Staff will need to discuss proper thawing, cutting, and cooking of meats.
  • Staff will need to remind student to sanitize items after preparing meat.

Household Cleaning and Laundry:

Staff will assist student with basic housekeeping chores as follows:

  • Bedroom- Change sheets, organize games, take out trash, dust shelves, make sure laundry is folded or hung and vacuum.
  • Kitchen- Wipe down counters, make sure food has not expired, clean table, clean inside microwave and toaster oven, sweep, mop, properly wash dishes, and make sure small appliances are turned off.
  • Bathroom: organize and clean vanity/mirror, toilet, fold towels, sweep, and mop
  • Staff will also need to remind Katy Anne of appropriate cleaning supplies for appropriate jobs. (i.e., not using kitchen towels to clean the bathroom).

Shopping:

  • Staff will assist in teaching student to shop, the process intimidates her.
  • Staff will assist in teaching student to shop for personal items and/or groceries. She will need assistance in making good choices with money, as well as healthy choices in food/drinks.
  • Discuss buying things she needs versus wants and sticking to the pre-planned budget.
  • Student will need assistance in reading labels of items that appear healthy, but full of sugar, or carbs etc.

Banking/ Budgeting:

  • Staff will help student learn to keep track of her spending as she shops and assist her in paying at the register, especially when using cash.
  • Staff will need to clear all spending with Mom or Dad before student spends money

Socialization:

  • Staff will assist student in learning to socialize with others in the community and understanding the difference between appropriate and inappropriate social behaviors.
  • Staff will need to make sure she understands and explain when it’s appropriate to laugh and make jokes, and when it’s not
  • Student struggles with navigating friendship we would like staff to help her navigate friendship issues and learning how to have more than one friend at a time.

Student will need to practice personal information with, especially:

  • Spelling her full name
  • teaching her, her brothers, parents and grandparents phone number
  • Memorizing her address
  • She may need assistance in Visual-Spatial Skills, such as puzzles, ordering-sequencing, etc.
  • Student needs to learn internet safety, phone safety and personal surroundings safety.
  • Learning to use the phone for needs would be great practice. i.e., ordering a pizza
  • Student will need assistance and may need reminders, about caring for her animals, i.e. cleaning her dogs water bowl, cleaning her frog/snake/toads terrariums
  • Staff will need to gently assist in healthy weight management plans.

Other Activities to achieve Increased Independence, Productivity, or Inclusion in the Community:

  • Staff will need to remind student proper safety when crossing a road or walking in a parking lot when out in the community.
  • Student will need time or to be told a schedule or plan…don’t just spring changes on her.
  • Staff will become familiar with de-escalation techniques and put these techniques into place if student becomes agitated.
  • She does not usually react physically, she usually shuts down and refuses to respond, move or interact with anyone when she is upset with

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 4 hour shift
  • After school
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Ozark, MO: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)

Experience:

  • Caregiving: 4 years (Required)

License/Certification:

  • Driver's License (Required)
  • CPR Certification (Required)
