Job Title: Arborist
Department: Base Operations & Maintenance
Job Summary:
The Arborist will maintain trees and woody plants to ensure their healthy, safe, and attractive condition, including chemical applications, repairing, cabling, fertilizing, watering, pruning, and removal of any dead, diseased, or declining trees or other woody plants.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Maintains a superior landscape appearance by performing horticultural and landscape practices, including but not limited to properly trimming trees, pruning plant material when needed, implementing, and monitoring Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures

Ensures irrigation needs are met by coordinating the adjustments of watering times with the irrigation department

Knowledge on how to repair, cable, fertilize, water, and prune trees and other woody plants
-
Knowledge on removing dead, diseased, or declining trees or different types of plants
-
Plants and transplants wooded plants to include hole preparation, backfilling, staking, pruning, watering, and mulching
-
Identify and recognizes diseased insect problems of trees and woody plants and apply appropriate treatments

May assist in various maintenance activities as required

Maintains records of work performed

Assists in maintaining tree inventory records

Identifies potentially hazardous trees and other tree-related problems
Required Skills/Abilities:
-
Proficient written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements
-
Possess strong computer skills, able to read, write, and comprehend written instructional documents
-
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
-
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
-
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
-
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
-
Ability to apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry
-
Proficient Microsoft Office productivity suite

Knowledge of horticulture methods and materials, landscaping and cultivation of trees and plants

Knowledge of horticultural practices, plant taxonomy, and insect/disease control
Education and Experience:
-
High school diploma or equivalent
-
At least two years of related experience required
Physical Requirements:
-
Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands
-
Occasional periods of prolonged exposure to loud noises
-
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times
-
Ability to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands as necessary
-
Ability to hear and see to position and safety requirement levels
-
Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, and chemicals
Special Qualifications/Requirements:
-
Must be able to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
