Description

Job Summary:  

The Fuels Distribution Mechanic conducts maintenance on all associated equipment related to fuels distribution, used oil systems, plants, terminal and spill response.   

Primary Duties:

  • Repair and maintenance responsibilities include fuel storage and distribution systems, and maintenance of a liquid oily waste processing facility 
  • Maintains and repairs fuel storage and distribution systems, using hand and power tools and testing instruments, inspects fuel receiving, storage, and distribution facilities to detect and correct leakage, corrosion, faulty fittings, and malfunction of mechanical units, meters, and gauges, (such as distribution lines, float gauges, piping valves, pumps, and roof sumps) 
  • Visually Inspects electrical wiring, switches, and controls for safe-operating condition, grounding, and adjustment, lubricates and repacks valves; lubricates pumps, replaces gaskets, seals, and corrects pumping equipment misalignment, and cleans strainers and filters 
  • Services Water Separators, checks meters for correct delivery and calibration, overhauls system components such as pressure regulating valves and excess valves, disassembles, adjusts, aligns, and calibrates gauges and meters or replaces them, removes, and installs equipment such as filters and piping to modify system or repair and replace system component 
  • Duties include cleaning fuel tanks and distribution lines, removing corrosion and repainting surfaces, overhauling vacuum and pressure vents, hangers, and roof sumps, and maintaining record of inspections and repairs 
  • Disassembles, adjusts aligns and calibrates gages, thermometers and meters and replaces them 
  • Must have knowledge of and experience in the practical application of hydrostatic testing 
  • Operates, Maintains, inspects, and repairs spill response equipment and accessories  
  • Participates as an on-call spill response team member 
  • May be required to be on-call as a spill response team member 
  • Maintains and updates schematic of systems 
  • May perform duties as assigned in the Steam Plant, Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • All other relevant job duties as assigned by manager

Qualifications


Education, Experience, Skills:

  • High school education or G.E.D equivalent 
  • Must be able to communicate clearly (oral and written) in the English language
  • Certified in Confined space. (Entry, Attendant and Supervisor)  
  • Maintain HAZWOPER certification IAW 29 CFR 1910.120 as required 
  • Must be qualified to wear a respirator IAW 29 CFR 1910.134 
  • Valid Alaska Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker/HAZMAT Endorsement 
  • Must be familiar with applicable RCRA requirements 
  • Three years of Fuel Terminal Maintenance and Repair or equivalent experience 
  • One-year Experience as Fuel Farm Operator 
  • Must be able to respond to calls for work outside of normal working hours 
  • Must be able to clearly communicate by radio 
  • Ability to provide, maintenance, repairs, and rebuilding of Fuel Distribution

Facilities

 

Preferred

  • State of Alaska Painters Card  
  • ASME-certified for welding of pipelines and components  
  • Trained and certified as a Shipyard Competent person

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, or standing, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, reaching, squatting, stretching, bending for prolonged periods of time; at times lift and carry as much at 50 lbs. on a regular basis and up to 70 lbs. on occasion.

Work Environment

Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires the ability to maneuver around maintenance sites, see, hear, and verbally communicate with co-workers and clients.  Ability to perform manual labor under dirty and uncomfortable situations and in all types of inclement weather for extended periods of time. 

May be required to be on call on a rotational basis as directed.  Travel to remote sites may be required.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Additional Qualifying Factors

As a condition of employment, will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to military base.  Having reliable transportation to/from work is a necessity and must be able to have access to military installations.
