Summary:

The Principal Industrial Designer will combine creative aesthetics design with practical understanding of mechanical and industrial engineering. This position will support both New Product Engineering and Product Development in the continuous improvement of KTI products and services. You will work closely with other members of the product development group and build strong cross-functional relationships with Product Management, Manufacturing, Sales and Regulatory.

Essential Functions:

  • Regularly develops sketches, renderings and 3D CAD models of product, both new and existing where necessary, to support and drive product development efforts.
  • Provide design concepts with consideration to aesthetics, functionality, durability, overall quality and communicate the KTI brand language.
  • Manage and coordinate various projects within New Product Engineering and Product Development, keeping them on time and on target
  • Coordinate and oversee communication with outside suppliers on new products, keeping them on time and ensuring design intent is met.
  • Create and maintain project estimates, ensuring new product designs meet cost and timeline requirements
  • Upfront system design and integrated testing of product.
  • Provide manufacturing and suppliers with detailed information needed to successfully build new product including 3D content, 2D documentation, color, material and finishes to improve control processes and consistency.
  • Works daily with multi-disciplinary teams to coordinate the development and implementation of new product and processes
  • Regularly Investigates system/product weaknesses to continuously improve and prevent further issues.
  • Assist with coordinating in-house & out-sourced 3D prototyping as required.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial or Product Design or equivalent.
  • Typically 12 years experience or more.

  • Must be able to convey ideas that will enhance KTI’s competitive position in the marketplace. Broad experience with application of design theories, principles, and concepts to a portfolio of multiple commercial/consumer product designs
  • Ability to effectively communicate industrial design data, design proposals and product specifications and negotiate options with Product Management and Engineering.
  • 3D Craft - Proven knowledge of SOLIDWORKS, ProEngineer, Rhino3D or Alias.
  • Proven ability to prepare production artwork & specifications for product graphics and standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Photoshop and/or Illustrator
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Broad understanding and experience in methodologies for design testing and validation, including sketches, models, storyboards, and prototyping.
  • Reviewing and evaluating designs for alignment with overall product architecture; recommending and implementing changes to designs and technology to improve product quality and overall industrial design.
  • Should be enthusiastic to collaborate with outside design resources, junior designers and interns as circumstances dictate.
