JOB SUMMARY:
The Program Advocate I is responsible for front office functions related to crisis support and shelter intake support at the Barbara Saville Business Office.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate shelter placement for battered women and their children.
- Coordinate room assignments with shelter staff; maintain vacancy list.
- Schedule and facilitate the certification training for the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault programs.
- Prepare monthly volunteer schedule and coordinate with the answering service to ensure that crisis calls are answered.
- Provide short-term peer counseling to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence as well as to family and friends of that individual.
- Refer individuals to appropriate community resources for additional assistance and counseling.
- Answer incoming crisis calls and direct them as appropriate.
- Maintain communication with shelter staff to ensure all documentation is complete.
- Advocate on behalf of incarcerated survivors of sexual assault to ensure access to services.
- Coordinate with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to ensure compliance with the guidelines of the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
- Administer and serve as point of contact for all Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) needs.
- Train shelter staff on HMIS intake documentation.
- Provide crisis intervention services to sexual assault and domestic violence victims as well as to family and friends of that individual.
- Receive, organize, maintain, and distribute inventory of donated household and personal items.
- Conduct presentations at local service groups.
- Attend staff meetings and training as required.
- Perform other responsibilities as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Associate's Degree in Social Services or related field.
OR
- Training and experience which would provide the skills, language, and ability to perform the essential functions of the position; AND
- Two years relevant experience working in an office setting involving social services, or related experience.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Complete the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Certification course provided by KCAO.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
- Travel and attend out of area meetings and conferences as required per the funding source(s).
- Work variable hours and days, including those outside regular Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. business hours.
- Meet and maintain KCAO employment requirements which include:
- Criminal Record Clearance through the California Department of Justice, FBI and Child Abuse Centralized Index (CACI).
- Reliable, insured transportation and valid California Driver License.
- Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) acceptable to KCAO's vehicle insurer.
- Health examination with tuberculin clearance.
- Ability to be contacted outside of regularly scheduled work hours in case of emergency
