What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Health Aide I position at Kings County?
One immediate vacancy in the Public Health Department. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The typical life of the eligible list is six months.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Community Health Aide classification series is utilized in the Public Health clinics of the Department of Public Health and in the community, assisting professional staff in providing educational, health and outreach services to clients and the public. Community Health Aide I is the trainee class in the series. It differs from Community Health Aide II in that incumbents at the II level are expected to handle assignments with a minimum of supervision whereas the Community Health Aide I works under close supervision and review of work assignments. The Community Health Aide I may advance to the II level upon satisfactory completion of the minimum requirements of the higher level and when, upon the recommendation of the Department Head, they have demonstrated the ability to perform at the experienced level.

Under close supervision, provides information to at risk and low income individuals and families concerning the nature, availability and potential benefits of public health services; sets up clinics and supplies; pulls and refiles charts for clinics; makes appointments for clients; prepares clinic schedules; collects eligibility information from clients; collects and processes cash payments; performs preliminary screening for eligibility; participates in the delivery of clinic and home visit services; learns to provide health education and/or counseling to groups and individuals according to protocols; transports or accompanies clients to clinics; assists in the preparation and maintenance of client and clinic records; may issue and explain use of program vouchers; refers participants/applicants to health care providers and community resources; takes care of supplies and instruments after clinics; completes and processes forms for clinic records; assists in establishing and maintaining favorable relationships between the Department of Public Health and the community; assists in the development and implementation of educational outreach programs and coordinates with local community resources; may make structured, limited home visits accompanied by other program staff; attends staff meetings and training sessions; may utilize bilingual skills in performance of job duties.

Any combination of education and relevant experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Experience: Six months of general work experience, preferably in a medical setting or involving extensive public contact or counseling.
License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
Special Requirements: 1) Certain positions in this classification may be designated as bilingual, requiring fluency in a foreign language; 2) requires travel to outlying areas of the County to provide program services; 3) ability to work some evening hours as required to provide program services; and 4) ability to qualify for security clearance through a background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
Work Environment: Work in an office environment including sit and work at a desk, stand and walk between work areas, stand at a counter working with computer equipment to serve customers, on the phone and in frequent contact with customers; communicate in person, by computer, and over the phone. Ability to work outdoors for community outreach events; must tolerate outdoor working conditions including exposure to seasonal temperature changes; frequent travel to locations throughout the County; ability to lift, carry, move, and set up supplies and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds to and from meetings and community events; safely operate a motor vehicle.
