Job Description
The Capital Teaching Residency is a three-year program. Residents spend their first year of this commitment - their residency year - training in a KIPP DC classroom with a lead teacher and completing relevant coursework. Secondary residents work in grades 5-8 (middle school) or 9-12 (high school) in Math, Science, English Language Arts, or Social Studies classrooms. Through our gradual release model, residents are set up for success by becoming an integral part of their school community and gaining more responsibility in their classroom over time. Secondary residents will join the Relay Graduate School of Education (GSE). After successfully completing Relay coursework and passing required certification exams over Year 1 and Year 2, residents will obtain their Washington, DC teacher licensure and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.
At the end of the residency year, residents who have completed all program requirements are invited to interview for lead teacher positions at KIPP DC or one of our partner public charter schools in the District. These residents commit to two additional years of teaching beyond their residency year.
Key Responsibilities:
- Following a gradual release model, take on increasingly more and different classroom responsibilities throughout the school year as determined by classroom need and resident performance
- Internalize and teach developmentally-appropriate lesson plans to support student learning
- Gather resources and prepare materials to ensure strong student engagement in lessons
- Track, analyze, and use data to drive teaching and instruction
- Implement school-wide student culture policies within classrooms and everywhere on campus
- Conduct purposeful observations of lead and other excellent teachers
- Participate in regular meetings with lead teacher and school coach, grade level meetings, and network wide professional development
- Participate in and implement feedback from observations, evaluations, and feedback meetings with school leaders, the Relay GSE team, and the Capital Teaching Residency team
- Teach in grades 5-8 (middle school) or 9-12 (high school) in Math, Science, English Language Arts or Social Studies classrooms
Mandatory participation in the Relay GSE’s two-year Relay Teaching Residency program. After successfully completing Relay coursework and passing required certification exams over Year 1 and Year 2, residents will obtain their Washington, DC teacher licensure and the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.
- In Year 1, attend Relay GSE classes 2 nights per week and complete all applicable coursework. These classes will be held in the evenings, after school hours.
- In Year 2, attend Relay GSE classes 1-2 nights per week and complete all applicable coursework. This class(es) will be held in the evening, after school hours.
- Prepare for, take, and pass three Praxis certification exams over Year 1 and Year 2, as required for Washington, DC teacher licensure.
- Take on additional responsibilities throughout the school as needed

- Preferred undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (2.75 required); For math and science applicants: Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or a significant coursework in science or math
