Position Summary

The Associate Director (AD) of Human Resources provides strong leadership to deliver results in key areas which support KIPP’s mission, strategic goals and values.  Through their unparalleled work ethic, the AD of HR cultivates a vibrant, committed and engaged workforce while nurturing a culture of excellence. Under the guidance of the Director of Human Resources, this position manages a broad range of HR activities including organizing, planning, onboarding, offboarding, employee relations, vendor/independent contractor classification, benefits and leave administration, organizational change, training, HR infrastructure development and risk management. The AD of HR advises, guides and coaches school leaders and regional managers to ensure compliance with Local, State and Federal employment laws and regulations; and consistent application of company policies across all levels of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • 6 to 7 years of progressive Human Resources experience, with at least two years of experience providing support to executive leaders.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, business administration, organizational psychology or other related field

Knowledge/skills required:

  • Passion for working in education or non-profit organizations
  • Strong knowledge of human resources principles, procedures and practices 
    • Experienced in employee relations, Leave of Absences, ADA and knowledgeable of CA employment law
    • A strategic thinker able to influence and drive results
  • Ability to connect with people with a wide variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and maintain productive and harmonious relationships across all levels of the organization. 
  • Strong project and time management skills with ability to multi-task and successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Co-leads change management efforts and strategies to drive and deliver results in all areas of responsibility, including employee relations, leave of absences, compliance, etc.
  • Collaborates with regional leaders on organizational effectiveness across people, processes and technology to enable the delivery of strategic goals and to optimize efficiencies and effectiveness and be a champion of change in supporting organizational growth and development of HR infrastructure.
  • Identifies need and drives effective organizational alignment and processes to enable strong partnerships with key functions at the regional level and across all schools.
  • Monitors HR operations, resolves problems, mitigates risks and recommends appropriate actions and/or HR data/technology efficiencies.
  • Oversees project plan creation, execution and delivery for multiple regional initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the HR Credentialing Lead, Talent team and School Leadership to improve credential compliance, employee relations, culture, morale, and retention across all school sites.
  • Owns a portfolio of schools and provides consultative partnership to school leaders.
  • Executes proactive and positive employee relations strategies to foster workforce stability and ensure highly engaged employees in a productive and safe work environment.
  • Identifies need, and sets systems and processes in place to ensure effective communication of HR initiatives across all levels of the organization.
  • Supports and assists with the development, implementation, interpretation and consistent application of HR policies, procedures and best practices; serves as a subject matter expert and provides advice and counsel to managers and supervisors regarding personnel practices, policy and employment laws.
  • Lead KIPP Norcal’s regional Mental Health Initiative 
  • Builds and maintains trust and credibility to influence leadership decisions related to HR matters and cultivates effective, strategic and successful partnerships.
  • Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues. 
  • Conducts effective, thorough and objective investigations and consults with the Director of HR to provide timely and consistent responses and resolution.
  • Oversees process, classification and compliance of vendor/independent contractor agreements; works with Regional Support Office teams and Operations Managers to review and approve all Independent Contractor Agreements.
  • Leads regular training and coaching sessions for the HR team on employee investigation and critical employee relations matters.
  • Builds and cultivates strong relationships with HR vendors while holding them to the highest standards of service and excellence.
  • Oversee and support the maintenance/updates of HR records and employee files in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Participates in the strategic development of department goals, objectives, procedures and systems which will foster best-in-class overall service.
  • Co-leads the planning and facilitation of the department’s annual retreat and weekly team meetings.
  • Establishes weekly/monthly work plans to effectively meet department goals and priorities.
  • Ensures compliance with all Local, State and Federal employment laws and regulations as related to employment, Education Code and Charter School regulations.
  • Manages, trains and coaches direct reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands

Physical:  Sitting, walking, reaching, bending, use of both legs; use of both hands, wrist/arm motion, grasping/holding, use of all fingers; lift, carry/push objects 1-20 lbs.; use of both eyes, color vision, near vision; sense of smell, normal hearing, distinguish sounds in transmission, speaking.

Mental:  Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and general alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: This role is currently hybrid with a minimum requirement of 2 days on site (schedule subject to change based on organizational needs). Office environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions.  Occasional classroom/school environment and travel

Classification:

Full-time, exempt position on a full year calendar cycle, located in our Regional Support Office with frequent travel to schools and districts.
