In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx. Job Description
Position Overview
The General Maintenance Worker (GMW) reports to the Facility Manager and performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure that all students, staff, and the community are provided a safe, attractive, clean, and healthy environment for learning and work.
This job is based in New York City and requires the ability to travel between sites for regular duties and coverage.
General Responsibilities and Duties, but not limited to:
- Perform general maintenance and repair tasks in a variety of areas and as assigned by the Building Manager and in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations
- Remove snow and ice by shoveling, plowing, and/or sanding walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps
- Report immediately any damage or vandalism to facilities, or theft of equipment
- Ensure that all applicable fire, safety, health, and environmental regulations and laws are observed and exceeded; Adhere to federal statutes and regulations, New York Department of Education rules and regulation, State Board of Education rules and regulations, school policies and procedures, and contractual obligations
- Perform regular inspections of equipment and systems, reporting any abnormalities and hazards immediately, include keeping a log of all maintenance functions and repairs performed
- Recommend repairs or procedures that are beyond the scope of responsibilities, skill, or experience, outlining the work needed and specifications required of an outside contractor
- Respond to emergency situations and perform necessary repairs and perform assignments relating to ensuring all school buildings are safe to use and occupy. This includes working cooperatively with other school employees even during emergency operations
- Notify and assist the administration and appropriate emergency personnel with any emergency, and potentially dangerous or unusual situations
- Use the work order system ensure that work orders have been written and approved before performing tasks, except in emergency situations
- Use up-to-date technology, including computers and/or electronic equipment, to fulfill job functions
- Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines
- Make recommendations for improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of the maintenance operations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or its equivalent required, with 3 years or more experience in building maintenance or related fields
- Demonstrate a general knowledge, experience, and proficiency in two or more areas of maintenance (e.g., plumbing, painting, carpentry, masonry/concrete/tile, window glazing, electrical, mechanical, HVAC and boiler systems, roof repair, plastering/spackling, field/playground maintenance, and furniture repair)
- Valid and up-to-date required NYC and NYS building certifications as applicable to particular building systems
- Ability to commute between school sites as needed
- Ability to display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school
- Effective communication skills, including clarity, proper grammar, and vocabulary.

Compensation and Benefits:
KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $60,000 to $72,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
