JOB DESCRIPTION:
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibility of this position is to set-up and operate shapers and/or hobbing machines within a single workstation to produce parts to specified part print tolerances. The individual must be able to follow general machine shop practices while working under moderate supervision. Responsibilities cited below are considered essential job functions:
- Adhere to established safety procedures and 5 “ S ” standards (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain the cycle) required to perform daily duties in this position, including the proper techniques used in lifting/moving of parts
- In Hanover and Wytheville: Sets up and operates shaping and/or hobbing machines, shaping or hobbing gear teeth or splines onto component parts as required by part print
In Hanover only: The slotting work station involves running numerous slotting machines within the work station
- Use standard inspection equipment or CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to check parts produced. Inspects parts to operator QCI (Quality Control Instructions) requirements
- Sets up machines using information from process charts to perform various operations on a wide variety of parts, machining same to a tolerance of .002” or greater
- Responsible for first piece inspection by assuring all print tolerances are held after set up and accurately completes job cards. Fill out SPC (Statistical Process Control) charts and all charts required for the operation
- Changes hob and shaper cutters, drills and reamers within a prescribed guideline and maintains required records as needed
- Lifts/moves work piece weighing up to 25 lbs
- Produces parts within tolerances allowed at the production rates assigned
- Other duties as assigned
- Communication skills, ability to read, write and comprehend instruction
- Ability to stand, stoop, bend, walk, reach frequently throughout the workday
- Ability to lift items up to 40 lbs without assistance
- Manual dexterity
- Experience operating manual/powered machines, tools and measuring equipment, i.e. CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) controls
- Knowledge of shop mathematics, including fractions and decimals, and blue print reading
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: General shop and machine tool noise, dirt, grease, and coolants from the operation of machine tools, machines and equipment. Normal working position is standing or walking through the plant. Some repetitive lifting/moving is required, depending on the daily assignment or tasks being performed. The weight can range anywhere from 5 to 25 lbs in which proper lifting/moving techniques are required.

One year in a manufacturing environment with demonstrated ability of operating metal working machines including set ups; interpreting and comprehending plans and/or blue prints
