Job Description
The Sterile Processing Technician is assigned duties performing decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery center, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.
Position Specific Job Responsibilities
- Organizes time, equipment, supplies and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management.
- Considers cost containment by using supplies economically and in effective turnover time.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedure, rules and regulations.

- Maintains supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipate needed supplies and report any needs to materials or designee.

- Is able to identify potential problems quickly and responds accordingly.
- Uses AORN, ASCA, AAMI, AAAHC, APIC, CDC for clarification of standards and procedures.
- Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, center/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Follows the center exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a center/unit team inter- and intra-center to facilitate the center’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the center, as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
- Ensure the Center functions in a coordinated, organized manner and provides quality care and services.
- Reviews OR schedule daily, as well as collaborating with Administrator, anesthesia and surgical staff.
- Delegates tasks to ensure the needs of the center as a whole are met.
- Reviews all documentation relevant to the services and assess compliance and completeness.
- Assists the Administrator to monitor/maintain center compliance with regulatory, accrediting and Center policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel safety.
- Is responsible for maintaining the sterilizer per manufacturer’s instructions including daily biological and documentation of such.
- Able to recognize any failed biological testing and follow proper protocol to pull all load items out of circulation and quarantine and log.
- Maintain all sterilization logs.
- Decontaminates instrument and equipment while following proper standard precautions.
- Assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments and supplies.
- Monitors biological to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
- Sorts sets of instruments, tray and equipment and makes them available to customers in a timely manner.
- Restocks, labels and maintains inventory, submits requisitions, collects and distributes instruments, trays and medical equipment.
- Rotates processed instruments as needed.
- Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing.
- Verified that instruments and equipment function properly.
- Repair, replace or remove defective equipment.
- Works with the physicians related to instrument needs.
- Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Credentials/Licensure
Preferred: Certification in Central Sterile Processing and CPR on hire or within 90 days
Related Experience
Minimum: One-year clinical experience in a sterile processing setting.
Preferred: One to three years recent experience in a fast-paced outpatient surgical setting.

Computer Competency
Knowledge of how to use a standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including a basic understanding of email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job.
