The Jacobs Family Library—opened in August 2007—is a central and integral part of the school community, offering an extensive reading and research collection and providing services to the entire school community. We host several authors each year, including best-selling young adult and children’s authors. The library is vital to the school’s mission of developing lifelong learners. 

The part-time library assistant at La Jolla Country Day School supports the daily activities and operations of LJCDS’s Lower and Middle/Upper School libraries.   This nonexempt role will be scheduled to work 24 hours per week, and reports to the director of libraries.

The library assistant: 

  • Supports our school community in their individual information needs as part of a team of four library workers. Includes locating and circulation of materials, individual instruction (using the databases, searching the online library catalog and the internet, light tech support (printing, simple troubleshooting of laptop problems, etc.), and supervising students.

  • Prepares materials for circulation (cataloging, processing), maintains MARC records, and executes regular inventory, auditing, and weeding.

  • Physical space. Creates displays, shelves books, and keeps work areas neat and organized.

  • Clerical duties. Maintains library calendars, creates overdue lists and other reports, manages day-to-day operation of circulation software, helps with promotion of library social events and social media, maintains equipment, record keeping, submits work orders, assists with bookkeeping and other clerical duties as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The library assistant must:

  • Be creative, collaborative and cooperative. 

  • Be adaptable and comfortable with change. Is flexible, patient, helpful and has a collaborative attitude.

  • Be tech savvy and confident in Google Suite, and be eager and willing to learn our cataloging software and other library tools as needed. A critical thinker adept at problem solving and troubleshooting. Willing to attend conferences, workshops, webinars, etc. to update skills and keep abreast of current library and ed tech trends.

  • Have excellent organizational skills.

  • Possess a love of reading. Able to talk to students about reading, make book suggestions and project a love of reading and learning.


Minimum Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree is required for this position. Graduate level library science coursework is a plus.

  • Prior experience working in a library, preferably in a school setting.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of library practices, including cataloging and book processing.

  • Excellent computer skills with an ability to apply existing knowledge to learn new computer programs and technology.

  • Enthusiastic about and possessing a basic knowledge of current children’s and Young Adult literature, authors, trends.

  • Familiarity with databases and digital citizenship (web research, citing sources, cybersafety, plagiarism, etc.).

All school personnel must successfully complete a fingerprint background check through Live Scan and provide current tuberculosis clearance.
