The Graphic Design department at La Roche University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Adjunct Professor—Graphic Design. Our department is dedicated to nurturing creative talent and preparing students for successful careers in graphic design. We are looking to fill multiple positions for the Fall 2024 semester, seeking qualified candidates who can demonstrate teaching abilities in the areas of User Experience Design and Professional Practices for Graphic Design.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver course content to students in our Graphic Design Department
  • Ability to teach and evaluate students who come from diverse backgrounds and levels of ability
  • Evaluate student progress and provide appropriate feedback
  • Follow established teaching procedures and protocols within the Design Division
  • Instruct in-person, with little or no virtual learning

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design or related field required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Ability to use online course platforms to present materials and evaluate student work
  • Prior teaching experience is given priority
  • Daytime availability is a plus

Candidates must pass background clearances and submit official transcripts prior to the issuance of a contract. These are considered adjunct (part-time) positions. Adjunct faculty are hired for specific teaching assignments and contracts are distributed on a semester-by-semester basis with no guarantee of future contracts. Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States. LRU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN

Course Description From Syllabus:

This course will explore the essential business side of the design major for advanced graphic design students. Topics covered include developing a professional identity package, including resume, sample sheet, business card, letterhead, LinkedIn profile, and self-promo. We’ll also cover types of design jobs and salaries; strategies, best practices, and pitfalls of working for a design firm or agency; design freelance business practice—from networking, business set up, client communications, and trouble shooting.

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver course content for Professional Practices in Graphic Design, covering topics such as industry standards, client relations, project management, self-promotion, entrepreneurship, and ethical considerations.
  • Engage students in discussions, case studies, and practical exercises that provide insights into the day-to-day operations of graphic design studios, agencies, freelance practices, and other professional settings.
  • Mentor students in building essential professional skills, including communication, time management, collaboration, and problem-solving, to prepare them for success in their future careers.
  • Provide guidance and feedback on resumes, portfolios, and job search strategies to help students transition from academia to the professional world.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in graphic design to ensure course content remains relevant and reflective of current industry standards.

USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN I

Course Description from Syllabus:

Introduction to user experience design. This course will Introduce students to foundational theories for visual design and accessibility, information architecture, user interface design, prototyping techniques, and various publishing requirements. Students will be introduced to a range of digital media formats and applications in order to establish familiarity with UX design problems. Students will learn and apply the theory and application of UX design including research, problem identification, concept building and prototyping.

USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN II

Course Description from Syllabus:

This course is an advanced study in user experience design which builds upon the foundation and application of UX design and theory from User Experience Design I. Students will further develop skills in research, problem identification, concept building and prototyping — with an emphasis towards solving complicated ‘user-centric’ design problems. Studio work will require solutions that demonstrate advanced consideration to information architecture strategy, design patterns, responsive screen design, and high-

fidelity prototyping

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver course content for User Experience Design, covering topics such as interaction design principles, usability testing techniques, prototyping methods, and human and user centered design strategies.
  • Engage students in hands-on projects and activities that challenge them to apply theoretical concepts to real-world design challenges.
  • Foster critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration among students as they explore complex problems and develop innovative design solutions.
  • Provide constructive feedback and guidance to students to help them refine their design skills and develop a professional portfolio.
