55 B/C Qualifications:
This position is designated 55b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Please provide a copy of your 55b/c letter when applying. You must meet the open competitive qualifications from the most recent examination announcement

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current Department of Labor employees with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Safety & Health Inspector/Trainee; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current list for this location if one exists

Provisional Qualifications: For the Safety & Health Inspector:

Either 1. a bachelor’s degree or higher AND one year of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR one year of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR one year of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement;

Or 2. an associate’s degree AND three years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR three years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR three years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement

Or 3. five years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR five years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR five years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement

For the Safety & Health Inspector Trainee:

1. a bachelor’s degree or higher;

Or 2. an associate’s degree AND two years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR two years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR two years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement;

Or 3. four years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR four years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR four years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.

70.1 Transfer Qualifications: One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Salary Grade 12 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.

70.4 Transfer Qualifications:
1. One year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service in a position allocated to a Salary Grade 12 or higher. 2. A passing score on the Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee exam and 3. Must meet the minimum qualifications of a Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee. Note: Candidates must not have failed the most recent examination for this title.

Duties Description

STANDARD DUTIES:
The incumbent will plan, schedule, and conduct safety and health inspections of selected work sites such as state, county, city, and town offices. Inspections may be conducted at places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations. Such work sites may include asbestos abatement projects. Inspections are made in order to assure conformance with established standards, identifying unsafe conditions and work practices, and to protect employees and the public.

Additional Comments

Candidates that will be new to the Division of Safety and Health who will be a trainee and/ or will have a probationary period will be required to work in the office for one year. Once this timeframe has been successfully completed, telecommuting options will be discussed.

This position may require a fingerprint background check and employee health screening prior to appointment.

Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.

NOTE: As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Additional location pay is available for the following counties: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.
