Hiring Construction Manager

Labor One is hiring a Construction Manager for a yard in the Ingleside, TX area.

Role: Construction Manager
Reports to: Project Manager

Summary:

The Construction Manager role serves as the principal leader over projects labor and equipment recourses. The CM works near term project needs and details while scheduling and planning long-term for the project recourses and interacting with other projects for joint awareness of shared resources. The day-to-day details of the assigned project, include but are not limited to: coordinating equipment procurement needs, scheduling construction activities, sub contract management, balancing and ensuring labor utilization, reporting, general cross-department coordination, and more. The role is also viewed externally and internally as a representation of the yard and thus the role is to be carried out in a manner consistent with internal professionalism expectations (per the Level Set). This role will be measured accordingly.

Qualifications, Measurement, and Flexible Responsibilities:

The goal for this flexible approach is to enable growth and change as a company to meet the demands of the market and stay ahead of competition. It is important to understand that by accepting being at this company and to do this job successfully, is to accept a changing environment and performing duties as outlined in documents/communication mentioned in this paragraph. As able and periodically, leadership may update HR files and job descriptions to capture the changes.

General Duties:

This is not meant to replace the Role Matrix detailed duties nor the section for “Detailed Duties,” see that documentation as well as “Additional Documentation” for full defining of assigned role. Generalized items are provided here.

  • Demonstrates an “ownership” mindset and be ultimately responsible for the success or status of the respective project construction.
  • Meet or exceed job/project deadlines and budgets as pertaining to the CM role.
  • Ensures using processes for the assigned role, and actively seeks to improve processes.
  • Assist the Training of personnel - new hires and existing staff that are being further developed in their roles.
  • For the Level Set for Professionalism, as the Construction Manager ensure you model the attributes for your project team and client.
  • Complete reporting, i.e. daily, weekly, monthly, etc.
  • One Marketing Team
  • Periodic social media posts will be sent with a link to staff. It is encouraged to at least click on the link and due a view. If desired, also do a “like.”
  • Marketing is a team effort across the company, every effort you assist with “search engine optimization” helps the company as a whole.
  • There is not a request to do anything you are uncomfortable with on your personal social media. There is a request, as you are comfortable, to know the big picture effect when we all participate in viewing company social media posts.
  • When in doubt, coordinate with the Director of Operations, or the COO/President for clarity.
  • As directed by the DO or the COO/President, there will be periodic and varied duties requested/assigned.
  • Context: this is a small company which means staff needs to be able to flex to other “hats” to wear in support of meeting the needs of the clients. It is the goal to have that flexing occur less and more efficiency is gained within assigned roles and tenure.
Information Management/tracking:
  • Utilize digital tools for tracking requests, tasks, progress, status, hand-offs, coordinating with leaders and project staff, etc.
  • If there is no database tool and there is a need, then create the tool.
  • Organize information related to your role on team/company drives that others can access.
  • Use manual information tracking and expectation documentation as needed for subordinates and teams.
  • The intent is to enable others to find the needed information in the event of your absence.
  • Ensures customer/client satisfaction through superior customer interaction    Always cultivate the relationship to maintain our brand of quality.
  • Always ensure support to customers is within the assigned agreement.
  • Work the client relationship from the job selection through the closing out of the job(s).
  • Every staff member is a representative of Sales and the goal is not only to win new clients but to win new jobs from existing clients and it takes our entire team.
Team building:
  • The Construction Manager has a direct influence on the team atmosphere within the project teams and Yard and will be held accountable for that influence.
  • The CM will also ensure cross-project/job collaboration with other PMs and CMs to plan for and execute resource management (staff, equipment, material, contractors, facilities, etc.).
  • The CM will ensure that teamwork is done to think through solutions and then work with the DO as needed for decisions.
Specific Duties:
  • Demonstrates an “ownership” mindset and be responsible for the success or status of the respective project.
  • Be knowledgeable in the offshore marine construction practices.
  • Schedules
  • Provide a 6-8 week forecast for teams and personnel needs.
  • Build, update, monitor, and plan for scheduling.
  • Meet deadlines and milestones by clearly understanding and driving critical path on the project.
  • Cross coordinate milestones and resources with other company projects.
  • Collaborate the planning with Supervisors and Subcontractors.
  • Provides updates to PM on work status, plan, execution, status.
  • Supports Program view by cross-sharing information and planning inputs with other PM/CM.
  • Coordinates information to/from Program Director to enable a global yard plan with three- month forecast.
Personnel:
  • Assist Senior Leadership in coordinating personnel and equipment requirements on assigned projects.
  • Ensure efficient labor and equipment utilization for project’s direct labor and mitigate cost overruns.
  • Assists advocating staff needs.
  • Works to understand needs of Supervisors.
  • Gives context/big picture to Supervisors so they make better staff decisions.
  • Assists advocating for promotions.
  • Interface and/or provide matrixed leadership with Yard Leadership, Estimators, Accounting, Administrative Staff, Senior Leaders, Safety, and more.
  • Closely partner with and review progress with PM and Co-Yard Leadership.
  • As available, work with Assistant Project Management administrative support.
  • Develops a team atmosphere with Supervisors, Foremen, PMs, Safety Officer.
Equipment:
  • Plans equipment needs in concert with PM.
  • Provides oversight of equipment accountability.
  • Coordinates with other CM’s and teams for reassigning of equipment (scale up, down, share as needed). When short on equipment across all teams/CMs/projects, do attempt to proactively coordinate early - give the information to senior leadership with a solution for what is needed.
Drive daily alignment of work across teams:
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Supervisors on overall project progress.
  • Understands and ensures effective communication of project scope, material timetable and intent of design to construction supervisors.
  • Ensures clear allocation to teams.
  • Ensures following through on plan.
Communication and decision-making:
  • Drive verbal and written communications across teams to ensure correct information, driving work, risk management, and generally getting the right information to the right person for work or decision (close the information loop).
  • Make project decisions within purview, and when in doubt coordinate with Senior Leadership for a decision.
Quality and standards:
  • Ensure Quality Control is coordinated with, included, and any impacts are accounted for (schedule and budget).
  • Ensure defined work includes schedule for meeting standards set by the contract, industry, and the yard.
  • Ensure direction from QC/QA is communicated and understood by Yard Supervisors and their teams.
Drawing quality review:
  • Assist inputs for Pre-project planning & Estimating with awareness, can give risk/thoughts/inputs.
  • Collaborate with Supervisor for design of work.
QA/QC interaction:
  • Ensure direction from QC/QA is communicated and understood by the yard team.
Interface with client inspectors:
  • Work with PM, QC, and supporting staff for inspector requirements.
  • Work directly with the inspector to satisfy requirements.
  • Keep senior staff informed of the work and results of the inspector, to enable Senior Leadership to support the teams.
  • Act as yard representative for client inspectors to protect and shield lower staff as needed.
Program level directing support (COO):
  • Assists in thinking across all projects high level timelines.
  • Assists in resource planning across projects.
  • Ensures awareness for Supervisors about big picture resources.
Safety:
  • Ensure toolbox talks incorporate key safety messages.
  • Coordinate with Safety Officer for procedures/policies.
  • Coordinate with Safety Officer for incidents/investigations.
  • Partner with Safety Officer and Supervisors to ensure high quality Safety culture.
  • Promote safe and best practices on all projects assigned and unassigned.
