Job Title: Parent Mentor
Reports To/Evaluated By: Director
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: Parent Mentors provide support to the parents of children preschool through age 22 with disabilities in the navigation of the educational system through assistance with interactions between families and district personnel; guidance through the special education process and interpretation of special education policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Participate when needed or invited in evaluation and IEP meetings.
Advises the district administration of parent needs.
Ability to serve as a liaison between district personnel and parents.
Submit project evaluation information and data when requested.
Knowledgeable regarding community resources.
Collaborate with the Director regarding topics that would be presented to the community as the part of the parent education series.
Collaborate with the Director regarding professional development that aligns with the District’s needs.
Collaborates with other parent mentors throughout Ohio.
Collaborates with school staff, administration, parents and community agencies to better meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Education, Experience & Certification:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Must obtain and maintain an Ohio Department of Education Educational Aide Permit. Bachelor's Degree in the social sciences preferred. Must have experience working with special needs children.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge in the following areas to include: Operating systems (Windows and Google), Office suites (Microsoft Office, G Suites, Spreadsheets (Excel, Google Spreadsheets, etc.), Communication and collaboration tools (Zoom, Skype, virtual meeting tools, etc.), Social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
Criminal Records Check: Must comply with Ohio Revised Code 3319.39 – Criminal Records Check.
Drug Testing: Must pass a 10 panel drug screen at time of hire and comply with the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988.
