JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and regulations at the Lake County Detention and Corrections Facilities. This work requires the ability to effectively use computer systems and electronic equipment, involves an element of personal danger and entails frequent contact with inmates and the public under routine and emergency conditions. Those deputies assigned to specialized units may have additional responsibilities and/or qualifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
* Maintains active radio contact with the facility and staff for directives and assistance requests.
* Responds to requests for assistance as necessary.
* Regularly communicates with numerous corrections and law enforcement departments.
* Searches inmate's physical person for contraband.
* Searches cell blocks and living areas for contraband.
* Transports inmates to on-site and off-site locations.
* Maintains order and security in the corrections facilities.
* Searches incoming inmate mail and packages for contraband.
* Conducts inmate head counts according to existing policy.
* Maintains accurate and complete records on inmate's movement and incidents in the facility.
* Responsible for the care, custody, and control of all inmates within the facility and at off-site locations.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
* Maintains uniforms and other issued equipment.
* Completes required documentation including incident reports, monthly statistics, administrative paperwork and time sheets.
* Refers the public to the appropriate agencies or services.
* Participates in special events and programs.
* Reviews reports and depositions in preparation for subpoenas for court appearances.
* Communicates with the Assistant States Attorney regarding cases.
* Testifies at depositions and/or in court.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS
* Must be at least 18 years of age.
* Must be a United States citizen.
* Must not have been convicted of a felony.
* Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character.
* Must not have been released or discharged under any other circumstance than an honorable condition from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
* Must meet visual requirements of at least correctable to 20/40 in each eye.

EXTERNAL and INTERNAL RELATIONSHIP and COMMUNICATION REQUISITE
* General public to include private citizens.
* Various other contacts relevant to specific department assignment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Previous experience in detention, corrections and law enforcement is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS
* Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
* Must possess a Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Compliance in basic law enforcement training with the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
* Must pass the state certification exam or must successfully complete academy training to become certified according to state regulations.
* Must be CPR certified and have First Aid training.

* Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, staff and the general public.
* Ability to exercise exemplary good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
* Ability to react quickly and calmly to emergencies.
* Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to record them clearly and completely.
* Must possess considerable skill in corrections administration and operation, including the use and care of pertinent tools, equipment, records and facilities.
* Ability to retain information, memorize codes and signals and use reference material with ease.
* Must possess basic math skills (i.e., percentages, decimals, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and read and distinguish the order of numbers.
* Must possess perceptual skills; perceive when to use force and when to retreat, ability to detect suspicious behavior.
* Must possess interpersonal skills, empathy, tolerance and patience, ability to successfully interact and communicate with different cultures and assess human behavior.
* Must be able to follow directions and take orders.
* Must possess listening comprehension skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have good cardiovascular strength and stamina including the ability to chase subjects on foot. Must be able to engage in violent and physical confrontations. Must be able to physically secure a resisting subject with the appropriate restraints after a physical confrontation. Visual requirements include the ability to use visual depth, distance and color perception, night and peripheral vision. Must be able to use both hands simultaneously and have manual and finger dexterity, flexibility of upper body and limbs, strength in upper and lower body, legs, back, arms and hands. Must be able to wear a utility equipment belt capable of carrying multiple pieces of required equipment for extended periods of time. Must possess coordination in legs, arms, hands, eye-hand, steadiness of hand/arm, physical speed, quick reflexes, balance/equilibrium and be able to stand for long periods of time. Ability to run, walk, bend/lean over, twist/turn and maneuver into and out of small spaces.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in the detention facilities. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Depending on assignment, the employee may be required to work long and/or irregular work hours, including evenings and/or weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may encounter the following: chemicals, fumes, toxic substances, insects, noise, vibrations, slippery surfaces, lightning, explosives, oil, tobacco smoke, radiation, radar, allergenic substances, electrical hazards, possible burns, confined or cramped body position for extended periods, irregular eating and sleeping schedules, bodily injury, contact with blood, bodily fluids, infectious or contagious diseases.
