As a Court Interpreter, you will be ensuring limited English proficient Court users have access to justice through full, meaningful participation in the judicial process. The general function of the position within the organization is to provide simultaneous and consecutive Spanish and English interpretation of Court proceedings for Spanish-speaking defendants. This employee interprets and translates English into Spanish and Spanish into English, orally and in writing, in all types of Court cases handled by the 19th Judicial Circuit Court. The position is under supervision.
- Provide accurate, unbiased translation that captures the literal meaning of each person’s speech
- Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services for jury trials, bench trials, and court proceedings
- Interpret for judges, attorneys, court staff, psychological service employees and other justice related personnel
- Research and understand terminology used in legal proceedings
- Translate documents for court administration as needed
- Transcribe and translate tape recordings into written text
- Maintain activity log of services provided to judicial system and transfers information to appropriate individuals
- Must communicate fluently and accurately between native language and target-language
- Document daily assignments
- Ability to travel to satellite locations
- All other duties as assigned
- Requires advanced knowledge of standard grammar for English to Spanish; and of English and Spanish vocabularies typically used in justice system contexts, including slang
- Requires knowledge of specialized vocabulary (terminology) in both English and Spanish related to court procedures; legal and criminal justice system terminology; terms related to injury and physical and mental symptoms of illness; test and laboratory analyses related to alcohol and drugs; ballistics and firearms; and slang expressions related to crime and drug use
- Knowledge of dialectical varieties of English and Spanish
- Knowledge of theory, skills, and techniques of interpreting
- Knowledge of ethical codes for interpreters and protocol of interpreting; and of standards and laws pertaining to court interpreting and basic court procedure
- Excellent interpersonal communication and tact, patience, and professionalism when providing interpretation and translation services
- Requires Associate degree or the equivalent of two years of college or vocational school education from an accredited college or university. Bachelor’s degree related to the field of judicial interpretation and membership to a professional interpreter/translator association is not required but is highly desirable
- Supplemental coursework in Spanish or judicial studies
- Requires a valid driver’s license, supplemented by a satisfactory driving record. Must pass an extensive criminal history background check
- Requires 1-2 years of related experience providing English to Spanish translating and interpreting services in a public setting, preferably involving a court system
- Certification with Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts preferred
