What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Keeper position at Lake Forest?
The Wildlife Discovery Center (WDC) is an award-winning nature center that has been identified as one of the top 17 places to visit in Northeast Illinois by “Family Loves Travel” and has received a number of accolades from some of the top professionals in the field worldwide.Our nature center features indoor and outdoor exhibits ranging from native birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians to a number of exotic species including a Komodo Dragon, Rhinoceros Iguana, crocodilians and a number of others.
In addition to the indoor and outdoor exhibits that are open to the public, the WDC offers a number of youth educational programs, summer camps, and offsite experiences plus group programs such as birthday parties, school field trips and special events.

- Daily animal care
- Animal enrichment
- Exhibit design and maintenance
- Maintaining the exhibit halls and public areas
- Teaching and leading educational programs
- Public tours
- Outreach to communities & other wildlife facilities
- Running summer camps
- Assisting with social media postings and TV/Radio appearances
- Possess a valid driver's license
- A degree or working towards a degree in the biological sciences, education, or environmental sciences, preferred
- Related experience can be used in lieu of educational requirements
- Possess strong communication and technical skills
- Experience working with a wide range of animals, especially reptiles, a plus
- Experience in good animal husbandry practices, a plus
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., as job requires regular bending, kneeling, crawling, etc.
- 4 days a week (28-30 hours)
- Must be able to work weekends & special events that fall outside of normal scheduling
Salary Range: $12-18/hour DOQ
