About This Role:
The Lead Painter is an integral specialty within the Facilities Maintenance department. Under general supervision, these employees are required to lead crews in applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect the interior and exterior of building surfaces. They may be required to occasionally work in environments that are dusty, wet, noisy, or which may contain hazards. This position is considered essential, and employees will sometimes be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. The Lead Painter works under the direct supervision of the Building Trades Supervisor in the Facilities Maintenance department.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.

What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities
- Painting Operations: Working crew leader responsible for overseeing painting operations in and on LU facilities/equipment. Responsible for painting the exterior and interior areas of campus facilities, fixtures, and/or equipment. Execute pre-painting activities, including cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, and masking of adjacent surfaces prior to painting, papering, texturing, etc. as required. | 50%
- Surface Preparation and Finishing: Stain, seal, and varnish wood surfaces. Fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other fillers. Apply protective coatings such as paint, primers, stains, and sealants to a variety of surfaces. Install/repair drywall or other interior finishes as necessary. Tape, float, and texture surfaces as needed. | 30%
- General Duties: Provide good housekeeping, cleaning up supplies and equipment at the completion of each project. Operate associated power tools to include saws, drills, grinders, and other tools as required. Perform graffiti removal from the interior and exterior of buildings as required. Install forms/reinforcing material. Erect scaffolding/works from ladders and mobile platforms. Perform other duties as assigned. | 20%
- Work includes knowledge of protective coating principles.
- Solid knowledge of commercial and/or construction painting techniques.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and email applications.
- Experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System is preferred.
- Demonstrates the highest level of ethics.
- Provides exemplary customer service to staff, faculty, and students.
- Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work.
- Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces.
- May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds.
- Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.

Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- At least 5 years of proven job-related experience is required with at least 1 year of experience in leading or supervising employees.
- A valid Texas driver’s license is required.
