What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomy & Customer Service Specialist Northern Regional Float position at Lancaster General Health?
Summary:
Phlebotomists are vital in the production of clinical laboratory results. It is their responsibility to obtain quality blood specimens which play a crucial role in the majority of clinical decisions. In addition to a knowledge of anatomy, blood collection techniques and proper infection control procedures, phlebotomists must have strong communication and interpersonal skills reflecting the utmost professionalism.
HOURS: Full Time, 40 hours per week M 6a-7p, T-Th 6a-6p, F, 6a-5p, rotating Saturdays 730a-12p
LOCATION: Position would primarily be at Lebanon but would travel to Kissel Hill, Manheim, and Ephrata Lab Testing sites on an as need basis
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ** Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
Phlebotomy
- Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection in an ambulatory setting.
- In a hospital inpatient setting, performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood collection according to laboratory policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. This includes Intensive Care Units, Medical Nursing Units, Emergency Department, and Trauma Bay.
- Optimizes patient care by providing timely and accurate collection of blood specimens on both pediatric and adult patients.
- Maintains patient safety by accurately identifying patients and associating the collected sample with the patient.
- Follows all proper organizational Infection Control procedures and isolation protocols, including but not limited to Airborne, Droplet, and Contact Isolation
- Uses technology such as computer applications to organize and facilitate efficient patient care.
- Works continually within multidisciplinary teams. This includes but is not limited to response to code situations (patient requiring resuscitative efforts) such as Trauma, Stroke, Hemodynamic Stability, and Cardiac events.
- Performs blood collection in environments of extreme stress and difficult emotional situations with proficiency.
- Navigate and mitigate work within a hazardous environment utilizing critical thinking and situational awareness.
- Carries out lab testing at the bedside with point of care testing devices including performance, evaluation, and trouble shooting of quality control on bedside analyzers
- Provide compassionate care in a professional manner.
Registration
- Performs complete and accurate patient registration including but not limited to walk in, check-in, and/or scheduled appointments.
- Demonstrates ability to successfully adapt and perform during times of high volumes and/or high patient acuity. Demonstrates skill to service both inpatient and outpatient, if necessary.
- Supports inbound and outbound calls to or from patients, guests, or appropriate parties as needed to provide services. Screens and accurately relays messages using protocols established for emergent, urgent and non-urgent calls.
- Verifies patient, guarantor, coverage and hospital account information. Performs required referral/authorization processes and enters orders for applicable tests.
- Understands insurance company coverage and referral/authorization requirements of payors. Performs electronic and manual verification of insurance coverage and understands how to read and accurately apply electronic insurance responses.
- Prepares and/or releases records or orders in the e-Health record. Scans all necessary documents into appropriate medical record. Understands the importance of patient’s medical information that is documented on paper.
- Completes assigned patient scheduling and registration work queues according to performance standards. Ability to resolve work queue issues and missing registration items via electronic medical record.
- Disseminates or discusses information with the patients regarding co-pays, out of pocket expenses, pre-appointment preparation, arrival times, etc.
- Understands and supports Point of Service Collections. Performs all necessary functions needed to collect patient financial obligations.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:
- Additional clinical procedures including but not limited to: EKG, holter monitors, 24 hr Blood pressure or vital signs.
- Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: **
- High school diploma or equivalent.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous phlebotomy or registration experience. Training will be provided upon hire
- One (1) year of Epic (or equivalent Electronic Medical Record) experience
- Customer Service Experience
- Experience in health care setting
