NATIVE PLANT HORTICULTURALIST
Land Stewards, an ecologically-based landscape firm, is seeking a Native Plant Horticulturist. As part of a passionate and committed team providing design, installation and management services, the Native Plant Horticulturalist will have the opportunity to work on diverse projects including naturalistic gardens, meadow/woodland/streambank restoration, rain garden construction, invasive plant management and natural stonework. Knowledge of native plant communities as well as general horticultural practices such as planting and pruning is a must. This is a hands-on position, working as part of a small team or independently. The individual must be competent, self-motivated, and able to communicate in a professional manner with clients, cohorts and collaborators.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Collaborate on landscape plan development and consult with clients on ad hoc site design
- Manage invasive and weed species through mechanical, cultural and chemical approaches
- Assist with site preparation, plant procurement, placement and installation
- Develop and execute management plans for residential, commercial and institutional clients including weed management, nutrient cycling, pruning, and editing on varied scaled projects
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 yrs experience working in professional capacity in landscape industry and 2 years experience working with native plants
- Able to demonstrate knowledge of native plant communities and sustainable landscape strategies, including stormwater management and habitat enhancement
- Ability to understand overall goals of projects while recognizing respective intricacies and nuances
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills and adaptability to achieve stated goals as conditions or unforeseen circumstances arise
- B.S. and/or certification within fields of horticulture, ecology, landscape architecture or related field of study
- Ability to work diligently and conscientiously in small groups or independently
- Demonstrated proficiency working with power tools (line trimmer, chainsaw, etc.) and machinery such as skid steer, mini excavator and backhoe preferred
- Ability to lift heavy objects (50lbs) and physically able to work 8 hour days in varied weather conditions
- Possess strong communication skills and passion for environmental design
Occasional weekend work may be required.
