This is a part-time position only available for LCCC students enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for the current semester.

Job Summary:

This position is held by a skilled person and assists the plant maintenance staff. This position is responsible for the programmed observation and inspection of the general cosmetic condition of the different areas of campus as well as routine inspection and minor repair of critical operational systems such as lighting, heating, cooling, and safety devices. Adverse conditions are reported to the MEP Supervisor and /or the work control center.  The position is responsible for responding to urgent problems and emergencies after normal business hours and notifies the appropriate management or on-call maintenance staff when additional resources are required.  The position is also responsible for generating work orders to address repair needs, building system failures, and damage identified by routine inspections. The position also provides an essential communications interface between students and LCCC staff to ensure that service concerns and chronic maintenance issues are addressed.  This position is responsible for some minor maintenance and repair as the time allotted for the position permits. Inspect lighting around campus and replace lamps as necessary. Compile a list of bad ballasts for electrician to replace.

 

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need. Assist other trades as directed by the MEP/ Trades Supervisor.

 

 

Compensation: $13.33 per hour, commensurate with experience. 

 

Start Date: Fall/2023.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions: - this position is eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. The lising of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned. 

  • Inspect lighting in the Residence Hall and replace lamps as necessary.
  • Compile a list of bad ballasts for electrician to replace. 
  • Observe and inspect the general cosmetic condition of the facility as well as routine inspection and minor repair of critical operational systems such as lighting, heating, cooling and safety devices.
  • Report adverse conditions to the MEP Supervisor and/or the work control center.
  • Respond to urgent problems and emergencies after normal business hours and notify the appropriate management or on-call maintenance staff when additional resources are required. 
  • Aggregate work orders from R.H staff and students, generate work orders to address repair needs, building system failures, and damage identified by routine inspections. 
  • Minor maintenance and repair as the time alotted for the position permits. 
  • Follows OSHA and college safety practive regulations and procedures. 
  • Provide excellent customer service by using professional and effective language to communicate. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and skill in working with industrial equipment and in an industrial setting
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality standards
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with area supervisor to resolve work and college course scheduling conflicts
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process)
  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate clearly with a variety of people, in one-to-one and small group settings – either face-to-face, by telephone, or by other electronic means
  • Ability to communicate in an informative manner and effectively listen
  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines and frequent interruptions
  • Ability to respond to basic inquiries from faculty, staff, or other students
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including computer, copier, fax machine, and telephone

Physical/Mental Demands: 

  • The essential functions of this position requires the ability to work in an industrial setting including but not limited to working on elevated equipment, in confined spaces, electrical equipment, complex machines, and chemicals; appropriate safety precautions, equipment, and procedures must be utilized at all times
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to squat, bend, twist, kneel, sit, stand, climb, and extend arms over head
  • Work in assorted environments and conditions above ceilings, on roofs, outside, inside, mechanical rooms, tunnels, labs, arena, hallways, meeting rooms and various campus facilities
  • Exposure to and use of safety equipment for outdoor weather extremes for extended periods
  • Exposure to and use of safety equipment for hazardous materials, chemicals, and fuels/petroleum products
  • May be required to climb ladders, maneuver in confined spaces, and work with tools/equipment in unconventional positions
  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long workdays, evenings, on-call service, and weekends as needed
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • To perform the essential functions of this position an employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally use team lift techniques for lifts over 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and jobs along with being able to respond quickly to emergency situations
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Admission at LCCC and continued enrollment in a minimum of 6 credits a semester, (exceptions may be given for summer term with supervisor approval)
  • Valid Driver’s License and driving record that provides the ability to be insured by the College’s insurance provider

Preferred:

  • One year of experience in an industrial setting
  • Experience using general tools and equipment i.e. hammer, wrenches, power washer, grinder. 
  • Mechanical aptitude.
