Salary Information
The salary for this position is negotiated through a collective bargaining agreement.  All new employees will be hired at the minimum salary in the range and will be eligible for merit increases until reaching the maximum salary in the range.

Definition
Incumbents relay information between 9-1-1 callers and police officers; dispatch officers and track officer activity in order to secure the safety of the officer and the facts of the situation.

Training, Education and Experience Requirements

  • Must demonstrate a minimum typing speed of 45 net wpm (after errors).
  • Possession of a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).  
  • Be a citizen/naturalized citizen or permanent resident alien without conditions on status of the United States of America by the date of the first test instrument.
  • Be at least 18 years old by the date of the first test instrument.
  • One year of work experience is desirable.

Conditions of Employment

In addition to the General Conditions of Employment, found here, the following specific conditions of employment and physical conditions apply to this position.

  1. Personal Appearance: While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing, and may not be covered by make-up or bandages. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  2. Incumbents are required to successfully complete training on the radio dispatch functions as an integral part of probation.
  3. Incumbents are required to work any assigned shift and day, including holidays, upon short notice if necessary.
  4. Classroom and call center environment; noisy distractions from multiple employees conversing over headsets; work with computers in varying light conditions.
  5. Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine prints in documents.
  6. Speech and hearing sufficient to carry on conversations using a headset, in person, and over the telephone.
  7. Vision and hearing sufficient to multi-task.
  8. Dexterity and mobility sufficient to repetitively use a computer keyboard and mouse as well as assigned equipment.
  9. Endurance sufficient to sit for long periods of time, as necessary

Applications will be reviewed to determine those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications.  These qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the remainder of the testing process set forth below. Exam Dates*
Exam  #1: Online Criticall (Weighted 25%)  – Beginning Thursday, January 5, 2023
Exam  #2: Oral Board (Weighted 75%)  
Beginning Friday, January 20, 2023

 

Exam Information
You will receive an email no later than 5:00 pm (PST) on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 with instructions to participate in the online Criticall exam. The deadline for completing the online Criticall exam will be Monday, January 9, 2023 by 12:00 pm (PST). NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

*The LVMPD reserves the right to modify the selection processes and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal, ethical, and professional standards.
 
**Due to security reasons, personal belongings permitted in the testing facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks, briefcases, duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees administering the examination and may be subject to a search.
 
***If you believe you are eligible for Veteran's Preference Points and want to be considered for them, you MUST attach your DD Form 214 (Member-4) or Statement/Proof of Service to your application showing 181 days of active duty in good standing.  We are no longer accepting hard copies at the time of your Oral Board. Criticall requires an Overall Data Entry score of 3700 keystrokes per hour or higher AND an Overall Non-Data Entry Score of 70% or higher, in order to pass. The keyboard portion requires a typing speed of 45 net words per minute, after errors.

 

Criticall is a computer-based assessment used to ensure candidates possess the necessary skills to perform the required duties for the Police Dispatcher Professional position. Criticall measures:

  5. Data Entry/Key Strokes Per Hour (While demonstrating the ability to multi-task under pressure and during disruptions.)

Additional Selection Processes
If you successfully complete the above selection process, you will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph exam.  A polygraph examination can be stressful and may affect existing medical or psychological conditions or ongoing treatment. Candidates are encouraged to consult with their personal physicians to discuss whether the polygraph will affect a condition or treatment and then follow the guidance of their medical professional.
