The ESL, Civics & American History Instructor provides education to students of the Family Center by offering English language reading, speaking and listening skills. Instruction is targeted at economically disadvantaged, limited English-speaking residents in the city of Lawrence. ESOL, Civics & American History instruction aids with civic participation in the community, assists with English-speaking success in the workplace, supports parents with English fluency, and helps interested students with transitions to college studies.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach ESL, Civics & American History to up to 25 participants at varying levels, while integrating core skills needed for English language learning.
Develop individual learning plans for each student and monitor student progress by updating plans and course progress regularly.
Use ESL text, teacher-created materials, computer and other media provided by LFD, as well as other appropriate materials, as approved.
Develop program curriculum and lesson plans for cycles of up to 16 weeks. Assess individual student progress and adapt curriculum and lesson plans to meet individual student learning and testing needs.
Assess student readiness to take the BEST exam and other English fluency tests, and coordinate with the Manager for Family Center appropriate application and test dates to meet students' needs.
Keep student records and data in accordance with funders' requirements, students, and staff needs.
Assist with the recruitment and intake assessments of prospective students.
Enter individual student academic data into internal data management information system for all mandatory reports to local, state and federal affiliates.
Attend all staff meetings and participate in programmatic activities.
Maintain a record of class attendance and contract absent students to encourage attendance and participation.
Record daily attendance. (maintain an average attendance of 90%)
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all participants' and students' identity and personal data.
Maintain strict business decorum and not discuss Family Center business with students or outside agencies.
All other duties as assigned, including orientation regarding reporting responsibilities.
