Make a difference every day! Lawrence School seeks a passionate and energetic Director of Middle School to serve as the instructional leader of the Middle School program.

The Director of Middle School serves as the educational leader for the Middle School Division (grades 7 and 8) and is responsible for overseeing its day-to-day operation. An integral member of the school’s Student Support Team, Campus Leadership Council, and Head’s Leadership Council, this position provides departmental oversight and develops strategic direction for the Middle School. The ideal candidate is in whole-hearted agreement with the mission, vision, and core values of Lawrence School, and has the ability to develop and maintain rapport with students, families, and staff.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Coach individual students related to academic, social, and personal issues and refer concerns to the Upper School Academic Dean or Counselor accordingly
  • Function as the chief communicator of the Middle School Division’s programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed and consistent with their individual roles
  • Drive new initiatives in the Middle School with the goal of continuing to develop and improve the school’s programs and services
  • Collaborate with the Lower School leadership team to ensure alignment of programming in grades K-12 and that decisions affecting the entire school community are made cooperatively
  • Implement and foster the growth of the school’s specialized instructional methods and ensure instructional consistency across classrooms
  • Lead the development of new programs and initiatives directed at improving the academic and social experience of students in the Middle School Division, in cooperation with school leadership
  • In collaboration with the Head’s Leadership Council, supervise and evaluate all Division faculty and staff and direct the hiring process for new faculty and staff
  • Observe, coach, and evaluate the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum and related classroom supports, as well as review and evaluate academic and social/emotional programs for implementation
  • Actively monitor the climate of the school and be consistently/frequently visible in hallways, classrooms, and common areas
  • Use data to assess program quality and student/family experience
  • Cooperatively establish guidelines for proper student conduct and dress within the Division
  • Maintain student discipline consistent with school policy and keep accurate records of academic, social, and emotional information
  • Maintain an awareness of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of the school community and develop plans for meeting those needs
  • Work with the school’s leadership council members to establish programs for new teacher orientation, provide ongoing professional development for all teachers, and ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of school operation
  • Plan for weekly PLC meetings and in-service training programs, in consultation with HLC members
  • Collaborate with the Enrollment Management Office to determine the appropriateness of student applicants and help make sure newly enrolled students have a smooth transition into Lawrence School
  • Create or participate in various working groups aimed at solving challenging problems facing the school through a collaborative, egalitarian process
  • Advise the Head of Upper School of the Middle School program’s budgetary needs, including supplies, technology, and other items
  • Monitor faculty and staff communication with parents and encourage regular communication among division staff and community members
  • Regularly collaborate with the Director of Institutional Advancement to ensure the accuracy of published information, with a special focus on information pertaining to the Middle School
  • Attend all important school events, including staff meetings, parent-teacher conferences, orientation, First Bell Curriculum Night, Commencement, and Convocation
  • In collaboration with the Head’s Leadership Council, supervise all Middle School after-school extracurricular activities, including athletic, theatrical, academic, and social events
  • Advise the Head of Upper School on program development recommendations and submit regular reports regarding the operational successes and challenges within the department
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and principal licensure
  • Five years experience as a teacher, counselor, or school administrator at the Middle School or Upper School level
  • Significant experience in managing student academic, social, and behavioral issues
  • Experience supporting the needs of students with learning differences
  • Strong technological skills, including use of desktop publishing programs like Microsoft Office, Excel, email, and database management programs such as Education Edge
  • Significant knowledge of various instructional methods and programs through which students with learning differences can achieve success
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, multi-tasking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
  • A strong mission affiliation to ensure that decisions align with the stated mission, vision, and guiding principles of the school
  • Attention to detail/accuracy, timely implementation, and quality performance
  • Consistently exercise discretion and judgment
