This is an essential position. The employee conducts interviews, evaluates qualifications for financial assistance programs based on information from customers and makes eligibility determinations in accordance with federal and state policies and guidelines, information is entered into VDSS or county systems (VaMMIS/VaCMS/Thomas Brothers). Submit local reports as needed and necessary. Explains responsibilities, rights and program availability to customers. Review VDSS broadcasts. Refer suspected fraud cases to Fraud Investigator. Provide emergency shelter duty in times of emergencies or natural disaster.
Ability to comprehend and apply policies and regulations for public assistance programs, sufficient to make eligibility determinations. Ability to schedule and manage own workload sufficient to meet deadlines for completion of job responsibilities.
Skill in the use of a computer and computer software such as word processing and database applications.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing with a broad spectrum of individuals to include customers, employers, courts, and medical professional in person and on the phone. Must be able to gather information, make mathematical computations, analyze information. Must have good sound judgment, maintain professional ethics, problem-solving, emotional stability and maturity, ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities. This employee must have a positive attitude, helpful demeanor, and exhibit a professional working relationship with staff, clients, and the community.
A high school diploma supplemented with additional training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is preferred.
Applicants may be subject to a Criminal History Background search, Central Registry search, DMV/driving record check, and/or pre-emplolyment drug screen.
The investigation may include: fingerprint checks (state Police, FBI), local agency checks, employment verification and references, verification of education (relevant to employment), credit checks (relevant to employment) and other checks requested by the hiring authority.
This position is covered under Code of Virginia 63.2-1601.1 or 63.2-1720 requiring the finalist candidate to submit to fingerprinting and provide personal descriptive information for a criminal history record check through the Central Criminal Records Exchange and a search of the Central Registry.
All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory results of the required checks and screenings.
Employee must be willing to work in the community emergency shelter in the event of a natural disaster or emergency.
