    The State Board for Educator Certification will require all first time applicants for an initial credential to be fingerprinted as part of a national criminal background check. A cost of up to $49.00 will be charged for fingerprinting.

    PRIMARY PURPOSE:
    To create new and modify existing regular bus routes so that students may be transported as safely, efficiently, and economically as possible. Assist with State requirements for routing, reports, and regular transportation compliance. Assist with coordinating extra-curricular activity trips when necessary.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
    • Develop and maintain the economical and efficient legal bus routes that will provide timely and safe transportation of students.
    • Develop special purpose routes and provide route description/information to the bus driver for all regular education routes.
    • Compile data and monitor efficiency and accuracy of reported miles traveled and student loads.
    • Provide first line counseling to employees regarding regular routes, loads, and safety as needed.
    • Assist with overseeing dispatch duties when necessary.
    • Notify campuses, students, and parents of route information changes.
    • Must meet all the requirements and be able to perform the duties of a Bus Operator and occasionally drive route or activity buses.
    • Willingness and ability to be assigned or reassigned to work at any Transportation Facility.
    • Performs pre-trip inspection of vehicle to ensure the safe operation of transporting students.
    • Maintains student discipline conducive to a safe ride and reports discipline concerns to the Asst. Director of Transportation or his designee.
    • Observes all State and Federal laws concerning the transportation of students and operation of a bus.
    • Originates and executes daily paperwork necessary to the department, i.e., student counts, miles traveled, discipline referrals.
    • Attends parent-student conferences with Director or his designee when necessary.
    • Supports all local board policies.
    • Report traffic hazards.
    • Demonstrates regular and prompt attendance.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    • None.

    GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
    Education/Certification/Experience:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.
    • Valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger & School Bus endorsements within 90 days of hiring
    • Driving record must meet State point requirements and district standard for driving district vehicles.
    • Must pass physical, including drug test.
    • T.A.P.T. specialist certification preferred.
    • Experience in working within transportation department/unit.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    • Knowledge of the roads; subdivisions; campuses; individual school programs; the preparation of specific regular state and federal reports; and safety regulations and practices preferred.
    • Skill in professional communication; problem solving; and intermediate computer use.
    • Ability to assist in developing route descriptions; adjust and deviate from route descriptions when traffic and/or weather conditions justify such actions; and communicate via 2-way radio.

    • Needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
    • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
    • Ability to understand, remember, and communicate routine, factual information.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize own work schedule on short-term basis.
    • Ability to make decisions which have moderate impact on immediate work unit.
    • Ability to compose basic reports and/or to orally communicate technical information.
    • Use standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
    • Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
    • Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
    • Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
    • Work with frequent interruptions.
    • Willingness and ability to be assigned or reassigned to work at any Transportation Facility.
    • Maintain composure and professionalism at all times.

    When operating a bus or other district vehicle:
    • May be required to physically assist students into bus.
    • Ability to regularly pick up 40 pounds.
    • Able to clean windshields, adjust mirrors, open/close windows
    • Able to move or lift injured students (up to 180 pounds) to evacuate bus.
    • Ability to carry or drag a 125-pound person 30 feet in 30 seconds in the case of an emergency
    • Work in hot, dry, and dusty conditions as well as possibly cold, wet, and damp areas.
    • Work near or with moving mechanical equipment.
    • Occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays and non-household dust.
    • Will be exposed to intermittent sounds of a loud nature.
    • May drive vehicle in inclement weather.
    • May drive in heavy traffic or on unfamiliar roads and in situations requiring precise maneuvering.
