Building Principal

 

Purpose:                  

 

The Building Principal serves as the site instructional leader and is responsible for the total operation of the school including the administration and supervision of all phases of the instructional program and management of the facility. The Building Principal shall provide leadership, administrative, and supervisory skills for the educational development of students as well as to promote parent and community involvement.

 

Reports To:             Director of Teaching and Learning

 

Supervises:             Certified and classified employees assigned to the building

 

License:                   KSDE Building Leadership License

Qualifications                     

  1. An earned master’s degree with a major in educational administration
  2. A valid building leadership license issued by the Kansas State Board of Education
  3. Ten (10) years combined teaching and school administration experience preferred
  4. Other alternatives as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

 

 

Essential Job Functions

 

General Administration

  1. Assists in the overall administration of the school district.
  2. Keeps abreast of developments in education administration and works in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the administration and operation of the school district.
  3. Leads the planning and implementing of professional development within the building.
  4. Keeps informed of and assists in interpreting federal laws, regulations, state statues, rules, and policies affecting education.
  5. Prepares state reports and claims as required.

Performance Responsibilities

  1. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other administrators, employees, citizens, and community members.
  2. Ability to lead staff toward instructional improvement and conduct staff development sessions.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  4. Ability to coordinate and supervise activities and programs conducted at the building level.
  5. Evaluate the implementation of programs within the building and provide in-service as needed.
  6. Ability to maintain responsibility for maintenance and proper utilization of facilities.
  7. Be responsible for the overall achievement, welfare and conduct of students within the building.
  8. Assists in the development and administration of policies dealing with discipline, conduct, and attendance. 
  9. Communicates relevant policies and procedures with regard to student discipline, conduct, and attendance to students, staff, and parents.
  10. Ability to perform student expulsions. 
  11. Works with and assists faculty in the development of effective classroom discipline and organization.
  12. Maintains an effective and safe school environment.
  13. Performs all required intruder, fire, and tornado drills on a regular basis and is able to implement emergency evacuations and lock-downs effectively.
  14. Assists in curriculum development to meet the needs of all students.
  15. Prepares required reports and paperwork such as discipline reports, suspension reports, expulsion paperwork, discrimination complaints, injury reports, parent communications, and other paperwork as assigned. 
  16. Assist in providing training on using and understanding data and assessments to improve student learning.
  17. Works with the Director of Teaching and Learning in the preparation of appropriate handbooks.
  18. Responsible for the selection and mentoring of staff.
  19. Ability to executive instructional leadership to improve student success.
  20. Supervises and evaluates certified and classified staff as assigned.
  21. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal and/or superintendent may assign.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

  1. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
  2. Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend, lift and reach.
  3. Requires the ability to travel.
  4. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
  5. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

  12. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or other Administrative Staff
