What are the responsibilities and job description for the High Needs Paraprofessionals position at Ledyard Public Schools?
Ledyard Public Schools is seeking High Needs Paraprofessionals. The High Needs Paraprofessionals, under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, assists with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills utilized the principles of applied behavior analysis
- Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs utilizing discrete trial instruction
- Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs
- Collects data related to student programs for use by the special education teacher
- Implements individual behavioral intervention plans for students
- Assists students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas
- Accompanies students on field trips for the purpose of assisting with supervision
- Constructs, copies and distributes and uses educational materials as needed
- Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement if IEP objectives, etc
- Participates in the IEP process and serves as a resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed
- Assists students with physical or cognitive disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities
- Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs
- Assists other staff or building administration, as needed
- Performs any other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students

- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associates degree or successful completion of the ParaPro exam required
- Previous experience working with students in inclusive and small group settings preferred
- Previous experience working with special education students is preferred.
- Previous experience with ABA/DTI preferred
- Willingness to be trained to assist all instructional and behavioral needs of the students
- May require placing and securing students on a bus and riding the bus to and from school daily with some students.
- May require support with personal hygiene for students
- Ability and willingness to carry over and apply skills from ongoing training
- Experience working within the school setting is preferred
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and under the supervision of program teacher
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding assigned students
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
- Prior experience working with students with significant cognitive disabilities preferred
- Professional demeanor
Pay and Benefits:
- Per the Ledyard Paraprofessionals Agreement
- Scheduled for 20-28.5 hours a week, depending on assignment, follows the school calendar
- Starting pay $15.00 per hour
- Paid time off
Essential Job Functions
- Works in standard office and school building environments
- Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk or standing
- Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds at times
- Must be able to traverse the classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child
- Must be willing to be training in physical management techniques
