Description of Work: Under general supervision, performs specialized administrative and clerical duties in the County Veterans Service Office in advising armed forces’ veterans and dependents of their rights and benefits available under federal, state, and local laws. Work involves greeting the public, answering telephones, scanning records into document management system, assisting clients in completing required forms, and ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Employee is also responsible for entering veteran’s data into the Vetra Spec computer software package and updating and maintaining information in all office computer systems. Duties require considerable tact, courtesy, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters of the veterans and dependents we serve. Employee reports to the Veteran Services Officer II.
Knowledge of: Experience with military personnel and veterans; customer service principles.
Required skills: Providing courteous and informed assistance and customer service to the general public (external customers) and employees (internal customers); being patient and attentive, listening to customers and being polite; presenting a professional image to the public in appearance and demeanor; maintaining confidentiality; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships as needed with the local, state and other officials, civic and business leaders, associates and the general public. Work requires skills in organization, communication, time management, and prioritization. Possess computer skills such as Microsoft Office programs, document scanning, and record storage management. Employee must also exercise initiative and independent judgment in determining clients’ eligibility for veterans’ benefits under federal, state, and local laws.
Minimum Education & Experience: High School or GED, and at least two years of customer service or public contact experience, preferably in government or healthcare setting; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Prior military experience or military affiliated preferred.
