The purpose of this class within the organization is to direct the operations of the Animal Services Shelter Veterinary Department and perform shelter veterinary medicine and services for shelter and public outreach programs.

This class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.
 
  • Assesses animal health for disposition of shelter animals including adoption, pet partner placement, or humane euthanasia; performs humane euthanasia as needed for disease control and to relieve pain and suffering.
  • Performs sterilization procedures, pre- and post-operative care for shelter animals to reduce pet overpopulation, and other non-routine surgeries are performed as the needs arise.
  • Performs physical examinations and evaluations on shelter and owned pets, the latter of which come through our public assistance programs.
  • Prepares animal physical examination reports and appears as an expert witness in court proceedings for cases of animal abuse, neglect, and hoarding; participates in the collection of medical data required for potential cases of cruelty, neglect, and hoarding.
  • Develops operational objectives, goals, and standard operating procedures and protocols for the veterinary department and supporting departments.
  • Provides employee education and training on animal disease, injury, or illness detection, animal handling, microchip scanning, vaccine, parasite, medical treatment, and humane euthanasia protocols.
  • Acts as liaison with the veterinary community and other governmental or municipal agencies.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
 
 
  • Requires a Doctorate of veterinary medicine or equivalent from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited school of veterinary medicine.
  • Possess an active Florida Veterinarian License in good standing at the time of hire.
  • Possess a USDA Category I license or the ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire date.
  • Ability to obtain a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration License.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record is required.
 
  • Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
  • Knowledge of and interest in high-quality high volume surgical techniques, population medicine/herd health, public health, infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, pediatrics, critical care/triage, nutrition, behavior and animal welfare.
  • Prefer training through Humane Alliance or similar surgical program, or the ability to obtain.
  • Able to work in a variety of environmental and weather conditions.
  • As the duties performed in this position are essential, you will be expected to report to work before, during, and after an emergency.
  • This position requires after-hours on-call telephone assistance as needed on a monthly rotating basis with the other shelter veterinarian.
  • Extra, rotational and/or irregular hours may be required.
  • Able to work independently, perform under stressful conditions and respond to emergencies in an ethical and professional manner.
  • The workdays and hours for this position will vary to include days, evenings, weekends and holidays.  Employee must be able to work any job assignment scheduled.
