Museum Educator Job Description
Legacy of the Lakes Museum is a nationally recognized antique and classic boat museum. Our mission is to preserve and celebrate the shared memories and experiences of Minnesota lake life and preserve that legacy for future generations. To achieve this mission, we operate a museum that is open from mid-May to the end of October, offer educational programs for all ages, and maintain a collection of diverse lake memorabilia, antique and classic boats, and fishing items.
Job Description
Legacy of the Lakes Museum has received grant funds to develop and implement an education project that will inform and shape expansion of our education program into a variety of learning experiences for all ages on and off campus. We are seeking a temporary, part-time museum educator to spearhead development and coordination of Teaching Trunks, which will be utilized by local schools. The project scope of work includes:
- Develop lesson plans and learning activities on each topic for elementary, middle, and high school students using the standards as a guide.
- Research and identify areas of overlap between the museum’s mission and focus and current Minnesota Academic Standards.
- Assemble Teaching Trunks based around each topic, including all supplies needed for teachers to successfully give the lesson.
- Develop process for use of and maintenance of the Trunks.
- Assist with marketing and implementation of the Teaching Trunks into area schools.
- Preparing a final report.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- 2 years of experience working with children or in an educational setting.
- Strong interest in lake life and culture, boats and boating, the environment, and STEM education.
- Strong oral communication skills, and ability to listen and be responsive to questions and comments.
- Proven ability to welcome, encourage, and engage with people of all ages, abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds, while sharing information or teaching.
- Demonstrated success in conveying program content and facilitating dialogue with program participants using a variety of techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and take individual initiative while also being able to collaborate effectively and contribute positively in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to think imaginatively, adapt to a range of situations in the moment, and problem solve.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using a computer to conduct research, write reports, create spreadsheets in Word or Google.
- Flexibility to work a range of days and hours including occasional evenings and weekends.
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with Alexandria area schools, programs for youth, community education.
- Experience in teaching & museum interpretation
Schedule
- The project will commence as soon as possible.
- The project schedule will be set after the position is filled.
- The project allows for 400 hours, to be completed by April 30, 2024.
Compensation
- The museum educator will work directly with the Executive Director and Associate Director.
- Ideally, the educator will work at least 20 hours a week. Hours are negotiable and remote work is allowed.
- $25/hour
Deliverables
- 3-4 completed Teaching Trunks, including lesson plans and activities
- Final report, including documentation of networking activities and recommendations for next steps
