Description
Summary: Part guest ambassador and part mixologist. Bartenders are responsible for enhancing the guest experience through personal interaction, food and beverage knowledge and local goings on in the community.
Reports to: Bar Manager
Job Tasks
- Use sales techniques to increase revenues from alcohol and full-service menu in the bar.
- Prepare alcoholic beverages for guests and servers.
- Serve food in the bar.
- Control inventory for alcohol and bar supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bar.
- Stock alcohol and bar supplies.
- Improve bar menu and drink recipes.
- Prepare drink garnishes.
- Monitor guests for safe alcohol consumption and limit problems and liability.
- Verify legal age requirements.
- Complete bar orders and cash and credit card transactions.
- Balance cash receipts at the end of each shift.
- Run cash reports.
Qualifications
Main Responsibilities and Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Customer Service: Must consistently be able to assess, anticipate and meet multiple guests’ needs at high quality standards and evaluate customer satisfaction without projecting a mood that detracts from guests’ experience. Must balance bar guests’ needs with those of guests served by wait staff. This requires practical knowledge of industry customer service standards.
Communication: Bartenders must clearly communicate in a professional manner with guests, vendors, coworkers and management. The ability to promote two-way communication by presenting clear ideas using thoughtful and responsive words. Nonverbal cues from a guest or server can alert the bartender to a potential problem. The bartender must also understand instructions, read written company memorandums and communicate when he or she needs more direction.
Interpersonal Relationships: Bartenders must adapt to different personalities of guests and coworkers without losing focus. Extreme familiarity or conflicts with coworkers often weaken a team-oriented work environment.
Problem Solving and Conflict Management: A bartender must recognize a problem when it arises and be able to resolve it appropriately by using good judgement, tact and initiative according to company policy and procedure.
Quality Control and Priority Assessment: Assess the value and importance of customer needs to maintain a high standard of quality.
Sales Techniques and Customer Influence: Use sales techniques and persuasive communications to up-sell products and services.
Performing General Physical Activities: Bartenders perform physical activities that require moderate strength including climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and handling of materials.
Analytical Skills: Bartenders must use logic and reason to identify solutions and alternatives for a successful outcome in many situations, including cost/benefit analysis; service and product quality; and conflict resolution.
Time Management Skills: Bartenders must utilize methods and organization techniques in a fast-paced environment to ensure efficiency and respect the time of others. Bartenders must be able to direct others, such as bar backs and bussers, to maximize efficiency and team work.
Technical Skills: A bartender must possess or quickly learn general accounting and mathematical skills and point-of-sale applications.
Language Skills: Must speak and write with excellent command of the English language including proper spelling and grammar.
Flexibility: Bartenders often work overtime, when needed, and assist the workload of others.
Initiative: A bartender must action frequently, collaborate with team members and develop new ideas that focus on results.
