Position Summary: Legal Aid seeks a full-time Paralegal to work in the Winston-Salem Office, which provides free legal assistance in civil matters to low-income clients in Forsyth, Davie, Surry, Stokes, Yadkin, and Iredell Counties. The selected applicant will be trained and work with the domestic violence team.

Job Description: The Paralegal will:

  • Interview applicants to determine facts of the problem and eligibility of services.
  • Obtain necessary documents from applicants and third parties, as necessary.
  • Create case files.
  • Input data into Legal Files Case Management System
  • Draft documents and letters.
  • Obtain records from the courthouse.
  • Perform basic legal research.
  • Provide general support to attorneys.
  • Communicate effectively with applicants, clients, and office staff.
  • Provide information about services and make appropriate referrals.
  • Perform conflict checks.
  • Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with LANC policy.
  • Participate in community education/outreach as requested.
  • Other duties

Qualifications: Candidates applying for this position should have the following qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor’s Degree
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent data entry and computer skills.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Excellent listening and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and professionally with team members.

  • Sensitivity to the needs of low-income clients.
  • Ability to relate to a multi-cultural population.
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred, but not required.

Salary and Employee Benefits:

The salary range for this position starts at $32,480 and will be commensurate with the candidate’s competencies and experience. Legal Aid of North Carolina provides excellent health, retirement, disability, and leave benefits. Employee medical, vision, dental, and life insurance premiums are covered at 100% by the employer. Discretionary 401(k) contributions with no match required.

Paid leave includes 1.75 days per month (21 leave days in the first two years; 30 days in subsequent years), 12 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, and other paid leave.
