DRS Naval Power Systems (NPS) a multi-site operation responsible for $350 million of revenue with locations in Menomonee Falls, WI, Bridgeport/Danbury, CT, Fitchburg, MA, and High Ridge, MO with an employee base of approximately 900 employees. NPS is structured into four Lines of Business: Surface, Submarines, Nuclear instrumentation and Controls and Marlo Coil focusing on supporting the power and propulsion needs of the U.S. Navy. We provide engineering, manufacturing and lifetime support of our highly engineered products.
Join our Menomonee Falls, WI team as a Project Engineer. This role isresponsible for driving engineering product development or aftermarket support execution and technical content for DRS's Naval Power Systems products such as power converters, motor drives, uninterruptible power supplies, energy storage and power distribution systems ranging from several horsepower to multi-megawatts. The PE leads a small engineering team to develop and execute the integrated master schedule and risk retirement plan. The PE works with engineering functional leadership and the program management office to ensure that the necessary resources are applied and delivering to plan. The PE works with the team to ensure product performance, quality & regulatory compliance, manufacturability, serviceability, safety and reliability are met for the product. The PE uses system design knowledge to drive overall product quality through verification, validation, and design transfer while adhering to the quality management system. The PE leverages their technical knowledge of the technologies, architecture, system level testing and interactions to anticipate and mitigate risk. Finally, the PE ensures that the product development process abides to the NPS Engineering Procedures and Product Development Lifecyle (PDL) process.
- Leads the engineering execution for a small project (5-7 resources), multiple smaller projects, or a specific scope of a larger project; this includes the design, development, analysis, documentation and testing support of products, systems, or subsystems
- Ensures the project delivers the required customer/internal features and quality on time and on budget
- Proactively manages cross-functional interdependencies to maximize team efficiency and avoid gaps/delays in program execution
- Anticipates integration and design issues and discerns appropriate actions to progress the team and project forward
- Review customer specifications, requirements, and statements of work and lead a project team to develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable
- Manages engineering project budget and schedule
- Identifies, evaluates, mitigates, and manages project technical risk
- Communicates effectively with manufacturing, supply chain, program management and the customer as required
- Participate in preparation of new proposals
- Interacts with technical management, other professionals, technicians and support personnel to coordinate, recommend and confer regarding technical activities and progress
- Applies critical thinking and facilitates issue resolution with the cross-functional project team.
- Supports Integrated Supply Chain in vendor and sub-contractor management with design specifications, statements of work, and collaboration on issue resolution
- Supports, communicates, reinforces, and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience (or equivalent combination of education/training and experience)
- Established project management skills
- Domain knowledge and expertise in at least one discipline of engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Systems, or Test)
- Demonstrated engineering experience to drive technical decision making for lower risk programs/projects
- Knowledge and experience in multiple engineering disciplines to foster leading a technical team
- Detail oriented, highly organized, and able to plan and ensure the on-time and quality completion of multiple assignments
- Able to effectively multi-task and handle changing work assignments, schedules, and priorities
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems
- Ability to document, plan, market, and execute projects
- Extensive PC skills in Project, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Windows, etc.
- Candidates must be a US citizen and meet DRS security standards as imposed by DoD, including the issuance of any necessary security clearance by the US government within a reasonable time after commencement of employment
Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge
- Experience in working in a matrix organization plus strong influencing and negotiation skills
- Education/experience with Earned Value and Control Account Management
- Experience/certification in Scrum or Agile project management
- Education/certification as Project Management Professional
- Experience in the development of complex products for military or aerospace applications
- Military service, especially with the US Navy
