POSITION PURPOSE:
The Dance at the J Instructor is an essential member of the Art & Culture Staff. The Instructor is responsible for creating a safe and open environment in class, which encourages dancers to participate and engage in a wide variety of activities and experiences. They are responsible for creative content relating to the four weekly dance classes they teach. In addition, they promote the acceptance and belonging of all individuals regardless of race, religion, cultural/ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socio-economic status.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the supervision of the Art & Culture Coordinator, the Dance at the J Instructor will serve as the teacher for classes from September 2024 through May 2025 as follows: Preschool Tap and Ballet for 3 – 5 year olds on Mondays and Thursdays from 1:00pm – 2:00 pm, Preschool Musical Theatre Dance on Wednesdays from 1pm-2pm and Ballet and Jazz for K – 2nd graders on Mondays from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. These classes run weekly with breaks for holidays.
More specifically, the Dance at the J Instructor will:
- Create and teach age appropriate content in ballet and tap, as well as creative movement and/or jazz, for the aforementioned classes.
- Effectively communicate and teach content to dancers in fun, engaging ways.
- Prepare and organize music, materials, and choreography prior to the start of each class.
- Assist with transferring children to and from the pre-school before and after class, assist with attendance and dismissal for the K – 2 class.
- Utilize effective behavior management strategies as necessary.
- Meet with supervisor on a regular basis.
- Create and teach content for a family dance observation on the last day of class.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in the dance studio environment, with basic knowledge of ballet, jazz, and tap.
- One year of college or equivalent training (advanced high school) in specified areas of dance.
- Experience working with young children, particularly 3-7 year olds.
- Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively as both an individual and as part of a team.
