What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Phlebotomist position at LIFESPAN, INC?

Position Schedule: M - F, 4pm-8pm

Summary:
Under general supervision of a Phlebotomy Supervisor or Pathology Manager and according to established policies and procedures, assists supervisor with scheduling, training and assigning phlebotomists and other activities of phlebotomy program. Provides input into development or revision of policies and procedures and assures implementation. Prepares and maintains records and statistics of program activities. Assists in the supervision of Phlebotomist and clerical staff. Regularly performs duties of phlebotomists.

Responsibilities:
Following established policies and procedures, prepares staffing schedules for Phlebotomist for supervisor’s approval. Adjusts schedule as necessary and arranges for adequate coverage.

Prepares daily assignment for Phlebotomist and clerical staff.

May make rounds on clinical unit to assure all samples were obtained and to troubleshoot problems such as locating missing samples; draws blood samples missed or those Phlebotomist had difficulty obtaining.

Following established procedures, trains new Phlebotomist and Medical Technologist students in venipuncture and “finger stick” techniques. Determines when training is completed and arranges for final review with supervisor.

Regularly assists with phlebotomy of patients.

Participates in the interviewing and selection of Phlebotomist and provides input into performance appraisals.

Provides input into development or revision of policies and procedures for phlebotomy programs and assures implementation and adherence to established policies and procedures.

Maintains and records a variety of records and statistics such as payroll, work load and program activities, training reports and the like.

Performs related clerical activities such as, sorts and files records, receiving patient into clinic/treatment area and as necessary interviews patient to obtain insurance, biographical and medical information to complete registration records. Provides patient with forms (e.g. hospital or regulatory required forms) for tests, gives instructions regarding any special preparation necessary prior to test or appointment, and coordinates, confirms and delivers patient’s final reports to the appropriate physician office and/or requesting clinic. May contact patient to return and repeat tests. May contact outside agencies/physician’s office to obtain additional patient information to complete patient records.

Regularly performs duties of Phlebotomist.

Performs other duties to assist supervisor as assigned.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Level of knowledge generally acquired through High School plus accredited course(s) in Phlebotomy Techniques.

Knowledge of principles of aseptic techniques.

Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, infection control, specimen processing, medical terminology, first aid and safety.

Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants.

Interpersonal skills to obtain and provide information to patients and to explain procedures effectively in order to allay fears and anxiety.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports, including keyboard skills to enter/access information.

Knowledge of blood collector equipment, anticoagulants used, special precautions and interference.

Ability to distinguish chromatic colors.

Leadership ability and organizational skills to schedule, assign and assist in directing activities of Phlebotomist.

Communication skills to teach phlebotomy techniques and to deal with Hospital personnel.

A Phlebotomy certificate required.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of two years experience as a Phlebotomist to become proficient in drawing adults, children and infants, including on the job experience to become familiar with operations within phlebotomy area and to effectively plan staffing schedules.

Works in a normal patient care environment with considerable walking between units.

At times, physical effort may be required to deal with patients who are uncooperative.

Some exposure to odors when handling specimens.

Exposure to communicable diseases while administering to patients, however chance of injury is minimized by the adherence to established infection control procedures.

Manual dexterity to perform venipuntures.
