Description
Conducts donor/patient interviews, physical assessments, and phlebotomies. Oversees donation process and recovery. Depending on location, work includes performing Whole Blood, Special Services, and Multiple Component Collection in order to provide excellent customer service and to produce safe quality blood products for patients. May be required to learn and maintain skills on multiple Apheresis Technologies based on organizational need. Gives good attention to detail and conducts work according to policy, procedure, and regulatory guidelines. Works as a positive team player to provide effective donor/patient processing. Works at other draw locations as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Treats both internal and external customers with dignity and respect in a friendly and professional manner.
2. Functions as a positive team player.
3. Prepares equipment/supplies (e.g. set-up, cleaning, Quality Control, Preventative Maintenance, and restocking).
4. Performs general donor and ‘specials’ registration on computer and manually as needed.
5. Interviews and makes physical assessments of donors and patients (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, temperature, hematocrit, and hemoglobin).
6. Collects patient and donor whole blood and apheresis units along with samples.
7. Maintains competency on multiple Apheresis Technologies as required.
8. Maintains appropriate Nurse to Donor workload ratio for donor processing efficiency.
9. Meets the varying needs of different types of donor/patient, making process adjustments as necessary.
10. Responds to adverse donor reactions.
11. Documents complete and accurate medical record information.
12. Protects confidentiality of donors and employees.
13. Actively recruits donors into Apheresis Program and other Blood Bank Programs as indicated by organizational goals and Standards of Performance.
14. May participate in training acting as a preceptor.
15. Completes and assists with other projects as delegated.
16. Works at other draw locations as needed.

COMPLEXITY:
Work mostly includes various duties involving different and unrelated processes and methods. Decisions on what needs to be done frequently require analysis of the subject in each assignment, and chosen course of action may be selected from several alternatives. Work involves conditions and elements that must be analyzed to identify interrelationships. Work may often include varied duties requiring many different and unrelated processes and methods such as those relating to
aspects of administrative or professional fields. Decisions by the employee as to what needs to be done include assessment of unusual circumstances, variations in approach, and incomplete or conflicting data.
NATURE AND EXTENT OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO THE POSITION:
The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines, assisting the employee with unusual situations with no clear precedents. Employee plans and executes steps to complete the assignment, following instructions, policies, and previous training or accepted practices. Completed work is evaluated for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy. Occasionally, the supervisor sets overall objectives and resources available, with deadlines and work plans developed in consultation with the employee.

12. Ability to drive a standard passenger vehicle.
13. Ability to train and mentor (i.e. act as a preceptor).
14. Computer literate.
15. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
16. Ability to follow and demonstrate good safety practices.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED. LVN degree.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum three months to one year of generalized nursing and/or clinical experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, ETC.
Current California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) License and current CPR Certification. Current California Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Refer to ADA checklist attached for physical demands.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Laboratory and Medical environments with high risks including Mobile Operations.
