Brief Job Summary
This position is responsible for supervising and managing the day-to-day operations of the Shelter Medicine program. The normal work schedule includes 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. After hours phone consultations are required on a routine basis. Job Responsibilities
~ Provides a full and optimal program of veterinary care for shelter animals.
~ Oversees the animal health programs, and coordinates with the Animal Services Director to implement veterinary protocols and standard operating procedures.
~ Provides health examinations, medical treatments and surgical procedures for shelter animals.
~ Monitors daily health status of shelter animals by organizing daily rounds with the Shelter Medicine team as well as weekly rounds with management, and the placement team.
~ Ensures medical and disease prevention compliance with Department of Agriculture rules and standards.
~ Coordinates with Field Services to provide intake examinations, detailed reports and medical attention for animals involved in cruelty and neglect cases. Testifies as an expert in court as needed.
~ Provides emergency care to incoming shelter animals as necessary.
~ Responsible for the oversight, operations and evaluation of the Shelter Medicine team.
~ Maintains current DEA and NCDHHS drug licenses as required by federal and state laws.
~ Maintains an accurate inventory of controlled substances.
~ Reviews and monitors controlled substance logs as required by federal and state laws.
~ Oversees the inventory and ordering of medications, medical supplies, and medical equipment.
~ Contributes to the oversight, management and maintenance of the veterinary suite.
~ Provides euthanasia training, instruction and evaluation for employees to become and maintain Certified Euthanasia Technician certification.
~ Provides Vaccination Administration Training for employees to become Certified Rabies Vaccinators via coordination with the local Health Department.
~ Participates in county operated rabies and microchip clinics or special events.
~ Provides veterinary consultations to adopters about existing medical needs and notarizes medical waivers.
~ Capability to work outside of normal operating hours in emergency situations for the provision of veterinary care, or to assist with infectious disease outbreaks.
~ Seeks continuing education as required to maintain Doctor of Veterinary Medicine license.
~ Participates in required staff trainings as needed.
~ Performs other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
~ Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.

~ Certified and Licensed by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board, with active and good standing.

~ Current and valid DEA License for controlled substances.

~ Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with having had a similar position for one to two years.

~ Ability and willingness to become a Certified Euthanasia Instructor though the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.

~ Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver"s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

~ Preferred Notary Public.

~ USDA Accreditation to complete health certificates in North Carolina (obtain within 6 months).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and Skills Required - ~ Knowledge of the symptoms and treatment of animal diseases.

~ Knowledge of animal shelter medicine and best practices for administering vaccinations, preventives and medications.

~ Knowledge of medical terminology and animal anatomy.

~ Knowledge of the techniques used in animal euthanasia.

~ Knowledge of herd health and individual animal care.

~ Knowledge of No Kill philosophy and related programs.

~ Skill with high volume spay and neuter surgeries, as well as other minor and major surgical procedures.

~ Skill in the safe handling of animals with unknown behavior histories, and the ability to utilize the appropriate equipment.

~ Skill in the use of computers and other related software programs.

~ Skill in oral and written communication.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
~ The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

~ The work is typically performed in an office, animal shelter, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and potentially dangerous animals. The employee uses protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
