Maintenance Worker II

Monthly Salary Range ($4,467 – $6,547)

Job Summary:
Seeking Maintenance Worker II to support maintenance, repair and construction tasks associated with District infrastructure.
Primary job functions include, but are not limited to learning District infrastructure, systems, and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and assist in all District activities required to install, inspect, maintain, and repair water system facilities and equipment. Perform routine grounds and building maintenance, gardening, janitorial services, and manual work.
Maintenance Worker II will report directly to his/her appointed supervisor. This role requires that applicants be capable of taking and following both verbal and written instructions, work independently or in group settings, and communicate clearly with District staff.

Essential Functions:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Provides on-the-job orientation, training, and technical assistance to new and less experienced personnel.
• Monitor safety practices. Set up work area with safety signs, structures, and barricades as per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and/or per the direction of on-site supervisor(s).
• Read and interpret maps of all underground utilities owned or maintained by the District; locate water and wastewater collection lines for contractors, outside agencies, and the public with advanced skill and expertise as needed.
• Understand how to use a pipe locator to pinpoint underground utilities and mark them for Underground Service Alerts (U.S.A.).
• Reviews work to verify compliance to standards and regulations.
• Serve on general standby on a weekly rotating basis to ensure continuity of operations during absences or emergencies once the incumbent has been approved by their supervisor.
• Inspects work performed by Maintenance Workers during and upon completion to ensure that proper work standards are maintained.
• Work with other departments, and contractors to establish procedures and guidelines for the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment.
• Plan future construction and maintenance of the water system.
• Collects field engineering data and prepare cost estimates on work performed.
• Use hand tools to expose broken service lines, repairs service lines, and install or replace broken service lines, as required.
• Perform maintenance tasks such as oil changes, air filter and belt replacements, etc.
• Builds forms, mixes, and pours concrete for repairs to slabs, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. Backfills trenches and uses asphalt to repair streets after pipeline repairs.
• Operates compressor, forklift, mower, weed eater, auger, high pressure washer, portable pumps, generators and other specialized equipment related to the maintenance of District facilities.
• Responsible for carrying out the mission of the District and adherence to the District’s and departmental organizational values.
• Excavate, inspect, flush, clean and repair water service lines.
• Operate a variety of equipment including large trucks and medium-sized construction equipment such as loaders, tractors, backhoes, trenching machines, and compressors, concrete saws, mechanical sewer cleaning equipment, hydro/vacuum trucks and CCTV equipment.
• Inspects and adjusts equipment before start of work; examines, cleans, and maintains equipment, including special attachments, lubrication, tires, oil, battery, etc.
• Record data using the District’s work maintenance software system.
• Learns confined space awareness and entry methods and enters or assists in entry for various maintenance projects in these confined spaces.
• Learns chlorine gas awareness and handling methods.
• Maintains or assists in maintaining plant landscaping, grounds, buildings, and roads.
• Cleans and paints District equipment and facilities as needed.
• Performs maintenance upkeep tasks such as janitorial duties, debris removal from around the facilities, cleaning and hosing off equipment and facilities.
• Develops and maintains positive public relations with emphasis on customer service.
• Performs other duties related to the maintenance and care of the District’s facilities and services as requested by assigned supervisor.

Environmental Elements:

• Working conditions in the field are subject to variations in temperature and may include wind, rain and other elements.
• Some parts of the body may occasionally come in contact with oil or grease, wastewater, chemicals, biosolids, and other products associated with the water and wastewater industry.
• Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards.

Working Conditions:
May be required to be on-call and to work various shifts or emergencies on evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Desired Qualifications:
A. Knowledge of:

• Use, purpose and maintenance of hand tools and construction equipment.
• General construction and maintenance materials, methods, and terminology.
• Department standards, techniques, and procedures.
• Safety and hazards associated with water and wastewater maintenance.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices including necessary OSHA regulations.

• Modern office procedures and computer equipment.
• The operation, use and maintenance of heavy equipment such as backhoe, loader, and dump truck.
• Tools, methods, and materials used in water and wastewater treatment equipment and pipeline installation repair, and maintenance.
• Applicable standards, codes, and regulations.
• Team based management, leadership, motivation, team building, and conflict resolution.

B. Skills in:

• Safely operating vehicles, tools, and power equipment.
• Driving and operating specialized equipment, including a small tractor and Class C license vehicles.
• Operating heavy equipment, vehicles, and construction equipment.
• Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work on water and wastewater systems.
• Modern plant equipment, methods, and developments in water and wastewater.
• Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and water and wastewater regulations.
• Using initiative and sound independent judgment.

Physical Demands/Qualifications:

• Requires ability to work safely outdoors in all weather.
• Stand, climb and walk for extended periods.

• Manual dexterity sufficient to grasp, hold objects and tools with full range of motion in wrists and arms.
• Hearing sufficient to understand conversations, both in person and on the telephone.
• Performing heavy physical labor including lifting of objects above 50 pounds with assistance.
• Ability to drive a motor vehicle.

• Grade 1 or higher in Wastewater Treatment Certification (Highly Recommended, but not Required)
