This posting is being used as a pool to fill various Tutoring positions on Campus.
This position performs a variety of administrative duties depending on the department and assignment.
Essential Duties:
This position performs a variety of administrative duties depending on the department and assignment.
- Facilitate student learning by establishing a supportive environment and helping students at varying levels to strengthen their abilities.
- Help students identify gaps in their understanding of course concepts. Show students how to learn, along with what to learn.
- Offers a variety of approaches or methods to help students understand course concepts. Works with students to develop effective problem-solving strategies.
- Promotes students’ self-reliance by referring them to textbooks, notes and other course information sources, and demonstrating how to use them.
- Avoids lecturing on course content and doing students’ homework.
- If needed, completes scheduled tutor training and participates in additional training and meetings.
- Completes daily schedule for tutoring sessions, communicating any necessary changes according to program guidelines as communicated by tutor coordinator.
- Complete any necessary task tracking and assessing the students ‘progress.
- Assesses own performance and adherence to tutoring objectives by completing quarterly self-evaluation and conference with tutor coordinator.
- Maintains regular contact with supervisor or tutor coordinator to discuss tutoring issues and receive assistance and feedback.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Must have Work-Study funds awarded/available
Education and Experience: High school diploma or an equivalent, and current student in good standing at LBCC.
- Writing Tutors must have successful completion of WR 121 with a “B” or above and recommendation of at least one English faculty member.
- Math Tutors must have Successful completion of course(s) you wish to tutor, as demonstrated by a grade of A or B. Satisfactory performance on competency tests (math tutors). Recommendation of an LBCC instructor for course(s) tutored. Overall GPA of at least 2.5
- SMART Tutors need to attend SMART training, and are assigned to read to & with one child per half an hour. Work-study students must be able to read & relate to children, & they must be able to pass a criminal history check.
Knowledge and Skills: Must be able to operate general office equipment, including computers for word processing and Zoom for video conferencing.
Abilities: Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities of the position under limited supervision. Must demonstrate the ability to understand and interpret staff instructions in order to assist students and support staff. Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of students and appropriately respond to those needs. Must be able to sensitively deal with students in helping with academic performance. Requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written English. Ability to use computer software and Learning Management Systems (Moodle) as required by course. Ability to use a graphing calculator (math tutors). Requires an individual who is able to provide multiple explanations of the same concept using a variety of methods or strategies, in the moment. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.
Must be able to operate a computer and/or other office equipment.
Work is performed indoors with no exposure to safety and health hazards. Considerable time is spent working at a computer.
