ESL Instructor, Integrated Education and Training

WORKSITE: Austin Career Institute (8711 Burnet Rd Suite H-98) Relocation 2023 (7215 Cameron Rd)

HOURS: Thursday evenings 6:00pm to 9:00pm plus time during the week to lesson plan

JOB PURPOSE:

The Integrated Education and Training (IET) ESL Instructor will deliver work-based literacy curricula to adult English language learners. In addition to student instruction, IET instructors will also be expected to assist in the intake/outtake processes for program participants, monitor student progress, general classroom management and appropriate communication with IET staff, volunteers and partner businesses.

Note: The IET Instructor Position is part-time. Instructors should understand that this position is likely to be supplemental income, and instructors should not rely on this position as their sole source of income.

ABOUT THE INTEGRATED EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM:

IET offers English as a Second Language and Workforce Preparation classes to students seeking a vocational training certification. We partner technical training school, Austin Career Institute, who offers commercial HVAC certifications. Students are all Spanish speaking English language learners. Our IET curriculum is customized by the certification students are studying so that students are able to learn the technical language spoken in their future workplace, are given a voice where they work, and have more opportunity for promotion in the future.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

• Commitment through entire length of IET class OR entire time committed for short term assignment
• Finding and preparing a substitute instructor approved by IET staff, in the event of a scheduling conflict
• Follow IET lesson plans and stay on track with class calendar
• Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ attendance
• Communicate classroom needs, challenges and concerns to Program Manager
• Communicate attendance, facilities questions and upcoming activities to IET team
• Identify the needs of learners and adapt teaching methods, materials, and resources accordingly
• Ensure that students know the class calendar, class meeting dates, activities, holidays, etc.
• Recruit and manage volunteers for the business for speed interview days, or teach supplemental lesson in place

of speed interview

• Encourage and empower learners to become more confident and self-aware
• Promote cultural sensitivity in all classroom and program activities
• Attend and participate in required professional development trainings
• Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences, including

o Planning weekly lessons (up to 1 hour per week may be claimed for compensation)

o Familiarizing with course curriculum created by the Literacy Coalition (up to 2 hours total may be

claimed for compensation)

WORK CONTEXT

Job Reports to

E@W/IET Program Manager

Mentor to AmeriCorps member

Supervise volunteers in conjunction with Program Manager

Interfaces regularly with clients and with partners

Subject to general input from supervisor

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION – Bilingual Spanish-English preferred

EXPERIENCE – 1 years ESL teaching experience. Experience working with adult learners. Experience working with AmeriCorps members preferred. Effective management, communication and interpersonal skills. Experience with alternative education programs for adults with diverse social, economic, and academic backgrounds. Sensitivity to student population and awareness of general challenges adult education students face. Access to reliable internet, computer and web camera.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

COMMUNICATION SKILLS – Effective interpersonal and client serving skills. Excellent oral and writing skills.

ANALYTICAL SKILLS – Ability to quality check work and keen attention to detail.

COMPUTER SKILLS – Proficient in Microsoft Office.
