What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aerodynamics Engineer (Level 2) position at Lockheed Martin?
Description:This position can lead to an exciting career supporting aerodynamics for Lockheed Martin’s most advanced fighter aircraft, including the F-16, F-22, F-35, and conceptual configurations of future aircraft being designed by the Skunk Works. The successful candidate will work with experienced engineering staff to learn the art of developing and/or processing aerodynamic data that may be derived from conceptual engineering tools, wind tunnel test, computational fluid dynamics, or flight test. When data handling tools are not available or need modification, the successful candidate may become involved in software development projects.
The successful candidate will support wind tunnel testing at on-site Lockheed Martin facilities or off-site at US Government and both domestic and international commercial facilities. Wind tunnel models of our advanced configurations may be instrumented to obtain highly accurate force and moment data, surface pressure data, or component store loads data. Massive amounts of data are generated in these tests that must be processed, analyzed, compiled into an aerodynamic database, and handed off to the air vehicle Performance team or Structural Loads team for subsequent analyses.
At other times, the aerodynamics engineer may use Pointwise or other similar software to prepare grid models and evaluate the configuration with computational fluid dynamics tools. This type of data must be anchored in wind tunnel or flight test data and processed to gain a better understanding of the flowfield or used to expand or develop an aerodynamic database.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support flight tests for air vehicle certification in a production program. This is where aerodynamic engineers gain gratification by seeing their years of work in conceptual design, computational sciences, and wind tunnel testing manifest as aerodynamic data acquired from a real flight article.
