Description:Lockheed Martin Space has an exciting opportunity for an experienced System Safety Engineer in Commercial Civil Space (CCS) Advanced Programs supporting novel NASA and Internal Research and Development (IRAD) programs in space nuclear systems. This position will contribute to the design, licensing, and operation of novel nuclear reactor and spacecraft designs for nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) and fission surface power (FSP) systems, building safety into the hardware, software and operation of flight systems, ground support equipment, and test operations.

This is a multi-disciplinary role that will have a diverse array of responsibilities:

• Work with engineers across a wide breadth of specialties to develop a variety of hardware, software, and operational hazard analyses.
• Work with US Government regulatory and licensing authorities to present technical information and obtain necessary approvals and licenses.
• Represent System Safety Engineering at engineering review boards, technical interchange meetings, and government safety working groups.
• Prepare plans, technical analyses, presentations, and reports and present to US Government safety review panels.

This position is contingent upon a program award anticipated for Q1 2023.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college in an engineering or sciences subject area with 5 years of professional experience; or 3 years of professional experience with a related Master's degree. Considered career, or journey, level.
• Knowledge of System Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary but team-oriented culture.
• Proficient with MS Office products.
• Ability to travel up to 20%, when needed.
Desired Skills:
• Degree, coursework or training in nuclear engineering, reactor safety, or related subject area.
• Experience conducting hazard analyses, fault trees, incident investigations, and/or Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs).
• Experience with NASA or US Space Force payload range safety requirements, NASA human space flight safety requirements, and/or US Government nuclear safety regulations.
• Experience working with NASA, DOE, NRC, DoD, or other government safety review boards.
• Experience with Model Based Engineering, Cameo Systems Modeler, or other requirements database systems.
• Active Secret security clearance.
