POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, assist in surveying functions including performing field surveys, mathematical calculations, drafting, research, data entry, and office work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate survey equipment (e.g., reflective prism pole, leveling rod, and total station)
- Perform field work for land surveying, including holding level or stadia rod at designated points; cuts and clears brush and trees from line of survey; carries tools and materials to and from project site; verbally calls out reading or writes station number and reading in notebook.
- Locate, place and mark survey points with elevation, station number, or other identifying mark using stakes, keel (marking crayon), paint sticks, scratches, tacks, or pins.
- Research survey evidence, maps, deeds, physical evidence and other records to obtain data for surveys.
- Index, scan and file hard and digital copies of documents and data related to surveys, recorded plats, project histories, and future project development.
- Operates county vehicles to transport equipment and instruments to various project sites. Cleans and stocks survey truck with necessary supplies and equipment for field work.
- Performs manual labor and uses various hand and power tools such as a pickaxe, jack hammer, air tamper and hammer drill.
- Performs manual and software-driven mathematical calculations.
- Performs other duties and tasks assigned by the County Engineer and Engineering Staff.
REQUIREMENTS
- Be at least 18 years old
- Possess valid State of Ohio Drivers License
- Reside within a 36-minute commute of the Engineer’s Office

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Basic knowledge of surveying equipment, methods, and techniques, preferred
- Previous surveying experience or surveying training, desired
- Basic skill in operating survey equipment, preferred
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
- Strong knowledge of mathematics concepts and ability to perform algebra and geometry
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret standard scientific journals, technical journals of legal documents
- Ability to read cursive handwriting
- Ability to communicate clearly with other individuals
- Ability to write reports and correspondence; copy and record figures; research, collect and classify data
- Ability to speak effectively and present information before groups of customers and top management
REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to understand system of procedures and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to solve and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Ability to courteously respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or business community members
COMPUTER SKILLS
- Strong computer skills (i.e. the ability to proficiently use software such as MS Word and MS Excel)
- Basic skill using CAD and GIS software, preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily be in an indoor office with the occasion to perform fieldwork outside. Fieldwork will include exposure to various outside weather conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, insects and poison ivy; risk of exposure to electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to:
- Occasionally walk long distances and transport and set up equipment weighing up to 50 pounds over rough terrain, uneven surfaces and hills
- Regularly stand and walk for extended periods
- Frequently go up and down a couple flight of stairs
- Regularly talk and hear
- Frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Use hands to finger, handle, feel, grip, grab, hold or carry
