What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Nurse-ECT position at Loma Linda?

Job Summary: The Clinical Nurse-Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) keeps pace with a proactive and progressive ECT management team and serves as a key member of the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) program. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge related to the specialty practice of Behavioral Health and ECT. Utilizes skilled discretion and independent judgment to prioritize, coordinate, provide and document direct and indirect age-specific and developmentally appropriate quality patient-centered care as appropriate to the provision of ECT for inpatients and outpatients under the care of a psychiatrist with ECT privileges at Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center (LLUBMC). Contributes to cutting-edge and innovative ECT for relevant psychiatric conditions, e.g., severe depression, resistant depression, severe mania, catatonia, and other psychiatric conditions successfully treated with ECT. Adheres to the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) standards of practice, ECT Welfare and Institutions Codes (WIC), organization and department policies and procedures. Performs the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) with minimal supervision as applicable to ECT treatment phases (Index Phase, Continuation Phase, Maintenance Phase), and in accordance with LLUBMC established Professional Practice Model (Duffy's Quality Caring Theory) to achieve optimal individualized physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellness. Respects cultural and religious practices of patients and incorporates into plan of care. Intervenes as a patient advocate as necessary. Uses available resources to address ethical issues. Applies theoretical concepts to clinical practice and exhibits self-motivation to continually expand knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in behavioral health and ECT. Coordinates patient referral activities. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Utilizes effective interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service and follows service excellence best practices to improve and maintain high patient, family and visitor satisfaction scores. Demonstrates solid service recovery methodologies and resolves issues expressed from dissatisfied customers. If in a recovery program, at least two years of sobriety is required for staff and at least five years for Management. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Associate's Degree in Nursing required. If hired after July 30, 2001, Bachelor's Degree in nursing required (may be in progress with expected completion 2.5 years from hire. Minimum of one year of medical-surgical nursing or Intensive Care Nursing ICU experience required. Minimum of one year of behavioral health nursing preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates competency in behavioral health nursing and ECT. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in area of specialty and population served. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation required. Exhibits professional behavior at all times and works calmly and responds courteously when under pressure. Able to: speak, read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; operate, troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment pertinent to position; comprehend and follow through with instructions, perform technical patient care activities using proper body mechanics and safety precautions; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; lead, supervise, teach and collaborate; think critically and use good judgement; problem solve and collaborate with licensed care providers as necessary; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; discern temperature variances through touch; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position.

Licensures and Certifications: Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required.
